Thought I would post this up here since the other thread is more about rifle choice in the hunting rifle section... Started off in the morning watching this open area and calling with nothing going on. After about 2 hrs I heard a bull grunt 4 times at the far west end so we moved down a bit closer. I continued to call with no further response. Then at about 9:40am he walked out at 270 yrds. I hit him hard the first time and he went 20yrds and stopped. I put a second round into him and that was all. Then the work began. We had to quarter him and pack him out the 3/4+ of a mile out way down past the far end of the picture to the truck. That took us till about 8pm. I packed one hind quarter out on my back and then a front quarter over my shoulder. The other two we pulled out on a sled. The final trip back for the head. We were all bagged and still paying for it today... He's not huge but I wasn't looking for a trophy, just meat for the freezer. Measured 43.5" across. I was shooting a 25-06 with 115 gr partitions. Both paddles are the same just bad angle and picture quality.

Good meat sized bull! I'd have shot him too if that size was legal where we hunt!

Well earned..... and tasty.
No doubt, Packing moose is killer. Getting them hanging above grizzly range is too.

I didn't look hard for both holes...one did for sure, it was a hole about 3" across. I was happy with the 25-06. Sorry I couldn't answer ur question completely.

One is a man's man if he can truly pack a quarter. In Alaska, I did hams, but no way could I travel with a full bone in quarter.

JD338 I recovered one bullet it was from an extra round i put into him as i walked up on him...still breathing a bit and i hate to see them suffer so i put another in. Nothing else found but i didnt look to closely, i was rushing to get him cleaned up and hauled out. On a side note he is soooo tasty...had a roast as it was outstanding!

I've packed many a bone in quarters in my time in Alaska. Too old for that now.

Always thought it funny, as the junior guide, I would get sent up the mountain with the guy with the sheep tag. The senior guide would stay below with the guy with the moose tag. Couple days into the hunt, we had a ram down and out and were now looking for a black bear, I would get pulled and told to break moose camp. Senior would take over. Standing in a deserted camp, instructions now in hand on where to find the moose and where to bring it and the gear to, realization hit me, when I felt behind my ears, a certain dampness. It had its perks, though. Congratiolations on your moose. Please excuse my drifting.

Hard work huh? Lots of meat. As a young man, we had a saying among our hunting fraternity: "Nothing spoils a good moose hunt faster than some damn fool shootin' a moose."

Thanks everyone...as much work as it was I would do it again. Next year my wife should have the draw in that area, so hopefully I will be! Ready, I don't mind the drifting at all! All good stories and love to hear about it!
