Why are these Redfield swing overs so desired?

Just closed on eBay for $301.99

I'm just guessing. Even into the 70's people didn't trust scopes. The solution was swing overs or shoot through mounts. The swing over was the classy prior correct answer.

My smart phone isn't too smart. That was period correct. Not prior.

Either a fool and his money, or a shill buyer.

There's enough moving parts on a scope and it's mounts to keep them on target, without adding a hinge, in my humble opinion.

I bought a pre'64 Winchester M/88 in the early 70's that had a Weaver swing over mount, it worked fine as long as you kept the pivot screws tight. They had to be tight enough that the pivot motion was kind of stiff, then you could pivot it and it would hold zero.

Redfield made a one piece mount with that same peep for pre64 M70's (no provision for swinging over though). It is more desireable than the same mount without the peep and sells for $25.00 or so....

There is no good reason for those mounts to have sold for such a high price. I'm pretty sure they were private labeled Weaver swing overs as both brands look much the same. The peep sight is not all that uncommon, just not often found on that particular base. In my best "Antiques Roadshow", I'd say those swing overs were worth about 25-bucks at auction! The sale is either a bunch of nonsense or the seller made the "deal of the century"

Why would anybody legitimate have a "private listing" auction so as to not show the bidders names on a common, low cost (normally) item? Something about that smells to the heavens IMHO. confused

I have one like Poconojack except it's for a 99. You have to unscrew the rings from the bases to get the scope off. Definitely not a quick switch over setup

+1 on JeffG's assessment of the sale, either a shill bidder or two guys determined to have it that got really stupid with their money. I never bid higher than a predetermined limit I set prior to bidding. If it goes over that my attitude is that the item was not the last one on earth and that given patience another will come along.

I got my Weaver Pivot mounts as part of the package when I ordered a Marlin 1895 and 1-4X scope from my gunsmith at the time. He had gotten the old mounts from his father-in-law, also a gunsmith.
I love the mounts. I wish Weaver would resume making them.
