With the limited range of a muzzle loader, (200 yds +/-), a 2" group is more than sufficient for deer sized animals. A good group for a muzzle loader would be close to the same as a centerfire. I have shot 5/8".

For what it's worth, the kill zone on a Midwest whitetail encompasses an 8" kill zone. So unless you are hunting smaller, like pigs or coyotes, you have more-than-enough harvest room to shoot at with deer.

I'm much more concerned with using a reliable bullet than getting tiny groups. 2" at 100 is plenty except for someone that is trying to turn their ML into a .270. Even at 300 yards a gun that groups 2moa should impact within 3" of the aiming point.
That's assuming the gun's accuracy carries to that range, that you know the range and have the skill to make the shot, and lastly that the bullet will expand out there. Lots of assuming there, too much for most casual hunters. I wouldn't try even a 200 yard shot until I'd actually made the same shot on paper at the range.

Practice a lot with a smoke pole. If I recall this sub 7.5lbs It shoots MOA @200, which is as far as I've gone.

That's the one I have, 'cept mine's green. $705 from Sportsman's Guide last year; a bit more now I see. In a pinch, it's really all the deer rifle I need. Fortunately, I'm not pinched at present.

Where the first shot impacts is of the most importance from a clean barrel. Some ML rifles from a clean barrel first shot will impact 4-9 inches high or low depending on the gun. Doc
