What kind of groups are getting?
I set one up last year and its hunting accurate but not Encore accurate
I wanted to be sure it wasnt my set up I stripped it down yesterday and put a new alloy base different rings and different scope

I shot it today and seems to still be a bit less than I expected
The one thing that help is I make myself a human lead (hold it VERY tight and secure)sled and its better but it thumps ya

its a violent little bastage

Hank

I had an MGM barrel made but ended up selling it before I even tried it out. I was thinking it would not be a lot of fun to shoot in a light rifle package.

I ran into an old guy at the range a couple years ago that had the .460, the .500, and the short .50ML barrel. He loved 'em, but wasn't happy with the .460's accuracy with 300gr XTPs. I found out later that the standard XTPs aren't made to handle that kind of pressure and may actually run pressures up because they're too soft, at least for revolvers. Barnes XPBs, hard-cast, or XTP mags are the answer as to pressure; accuracy is where you find it.

The XPB 250s are designed for the .454, the 225s for .45 Colt. The .225s have a taper towards the rear which ain't good, per Brian Pearce. I bought a couple boxes of the 250s for my ML. They are as long as the 300gr XTPs and the hole in them is very deep.

In case you didn't catch my drift, I'd try the .250 XPB. Be sure you use data developed for it as unlike the TSXs, these don't have the rings cut in them and data for lead core is too hot. Even at lower velocity, they should be deadly, in fact, I'm banking on it with my Knight.

I have been working with the Hornady 250 gr. FTX. One load is 2403fps,the other is 2570fps.The2400 load goes 1.5 to1.75 inches . Not to bad to shoot . Killed a deer on a nusence permit with the lighter load.Worked well DRT. The 2570 load shoots as well, however I think I will reduce it to 2500.

Boatboy,

I'm in Michigan also, so I think I have an idea what you want the barrel for. Buddy of mine did a 460 MGM barrel. Brutal to shoot. If you do it, I suggest the 6 screw scope mount.

I'm doing a 450 Bushmaster MGM barrel instead

Around here, Encores have a reputation for being hard kckers, especially the MLs and slug guns. The only Encore rifle I ever fired was a ML with a laminated thumbhole stock. It was a real anvil, so it soaked up the recoil pretty well. Those synthetic 20" jobs ought to be pretty sporty. If legal, I think I'd go with a .357 Max and maybe 180 Swifts.

I have a 460 that started life as a 16 in pistol barrel. someone installed a permanent muzzle brake and it is now 17.5" and legal as a carbine.
In the process of working up some reduced loads to answer the recoil issue as well as over revving a pistol bullet.
I'll post results once I have them.

Not a bad idea at all. A good inline with BH209 and an easy-loading bullet answers a lot of hunting "questions". Once I finish getting my CF's ready, I'm going to spend some time with the Knight and the pile of projectiles I want to test. Re-sized FPBs, Nosler 300gr BTs and Barnes 250gr XPBs are all in the running. All will work, of course. I'm mainly interested in establishing the best charge for each and how close the different bullets will impact with the same sight setting.

The 460 Encore is very important to me.

I want to make sure I never shoot one!

I had one, now wish I had kept it, shot .75 inch groups at 50yrd as long as I could stand it 250 gr and 300 gr shot to the same point of impact at 50 yrd and 300s about 1.5 lower at 100, you can use Hornadys 50cal muzzle loader saboted bullet they are 45 cal I did not get any before I sold my barrel but heard that it solves the fragile pistol bullet problem, the thumb hole stock gives better control of the JUMP or mule kick

Well I found a 23" 44mag barrel that had been re-chambered to 444 Marlin. Its accurate and give one reason to pause and reflect when shooting.

I live in Mich. and can telly you how to set up a 460 s&W. First you get your encore frame, then you order the MGM 24 in bbl. with a full bull contour - 1.0" all the way no taper, you get the four screw mount for three rings on it. Then you buy the boyds composite stocks for it, free float the foreend with pillars or you get some rubber washers, then you top with your scope of choice, (if it were me I like the leupold 6x fixed). Then you take your barnes original 300 semi spitzer size it to 452-453., stuff it full of H110. Wala, 200 yard plus deer thumper for the lower slug zone. 1.0 inch groups no problem at 100, minute of pop can at 250. Recoil yes, but if you want the performance you need to take the recoil. This set is pleasant to shoot until you start getting your 300 grain bullets barnes orignials sized, horn xtps in the 2300 fps range, then things start to get a little harsh. If you want the performance you need the weight, the factory barrels Katadyn (sp) are too light for the 460 / 500 unless you are a glutton for punishment. This set up is heavy, not for woods stalking. This is a bean/cornfield rifle. The other good options seems to be the 357 max. or 44 super mag, 450 bush, 45 raptor in a rifle.

An alloy scope base? They flex. Try a steel one. I use only Leupold dual dovetail bases.
