What are the pros and cons on these 16.5" barrel carbines? Weight is good at 6# but, they would probably be more muzzle light than the No.1 RSI and I don't think they're D&T for scope. I wonder if they have the same trigger as Browning's 1885?

Browning is long gone in the 1885 market. Just take a look at the "new" A5 to see where they are headed.

I want a High Wall .30/30 or .38/55, but those are too short for my use. Not sure just what they were thinking when they dreamed those up. A 22 inch barrel would have been plenty handy and still had a decent sight radius.

These are going for a grand on GB, raising the possibility of picking one up and re-barreling it to a useful length. Hmmm... .38/55 could go .25/35.

The problem is a "real" trapper would be a very low end round like pistol size ctg for shooting animal in the trap. hence the name trapper. Like some one already stated these are way too much power for too little barrel. And too much for a trapper. They just sit like turds in every gun shop foolish enough to take one in. Anyone wanting one, for a wall hanger or project, should be able to negotiate hard on these.

The problem is not to short a barrel. Winchester made this gun back in the day. The problem is choice of calibers. Some ideas, 44/40, 22mag, 357?

I got a friend who is not so polite in person as some posting here. He wanted a trapper 85 for some time. I asked him about this gun and why he did not have one already. I guess, not!

The heavier calibers have to be impractical because of recoil. .30-40? .45-70? Come ON!

I've fired an original Win '85 "Standard Carbine" with a 15" barrel in .44-40--they were NEVER called "Trappers" by Winchester. Enough recoil for most of us if you use equivalent loads to the old "HV" factory rifle loads.

The originals used Low Wall actions for light weight, but the added weight of the current ones' High Wall action doesn't compensate for the recoil of those inappropriate calibers.

'inappropriate'? I'd love one in .45-70.

Maybe in the future thy can do a trapper in 50/110!

You know, the big fifty, would be a pretty cool gun in an 1886, pistol grip, 1/2 magazine, any reasonable barrel length such as 24 to 26 inches or what ever as long as it cam with shotgun butt & pistol grip- a must for us non-trapping sissies.
