My cousin has made three trips to Newfoundland hunting moose. They cross the ferry with a 4 wheel drive and a big utility trailer for an argo. The trailer also has a 20 cubic foot freezer bolted down on the deck and a gasoline generator. They run the generator all the way home. Not sure if they are required to shut it down on the ferry ride though.

No moose for us. As it turned out, we had schitty hunting weather. Mid '70's & sunny everyday, "Super" full moon at night. No animals moving.
The coolers were used to bring lobsters home. wink

Hauled everything home in a 4'x8' enclosed trailer.

It took me two days to get home including the ferry ride (I live in NY). All the meat was fine.

A 900 pound moose only gave you 300lbs of meat? It was either shot to poop or so filthy they had to throw half your meat out? At the most there should be 40 to 45% waste for bone and trim or your butcher needs to answer some questions. IMHO just FYI no offense meant...

I just butchered this moose last night, no idea what it weighed on the hoof. It was a typical medium sized bull moose for Saskatchewan.

We weighed the deboned, trimmed and not yet packaged meat. Just slightly under 300 lbs. It did have one shot through a hind leg, maybe 10 lbs of meat lost there. I did not weigh the waste, but I'm guessing there was about 40 lbs of waste trim in all, not counting the bones. Most butchers use a bandsaw, and so bones are part of the "yield" - we completely debone our game at home.

It was properly handled with a skinning pole and good meat bags in the field, but some of the outside is lost no matter what. After a week of so of aging, we take off all the contaminated, dirty, or discoloured stuff on the outside, about 1/8 -1/4" of most of the surface. Just how we do it, others may have different experiences.
