Since you are planning to go with the Edge stock on the rifle, I might have just what you are going to spend in a ready to go now rifle.

It has a Douglas air gauged stainless barrel with 5R rifling. The contour is the same as what comes on the Remington Classic rifles with a 1 - 10 twist and a length of 22 inches.

Manners stock in tan and not painted or dipped yet.

Remington 700 action that was new from an unfired Remington Classic in 30-06.

I'll probably get flogged in public for saying this but I really like my Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 30-06. It's accurate, fairly light and the safety is, as Jeff Quinn says, "where God intended it to be". Good recoil pad and I like the duratouch finish on the stock too. It's not hard plastic like a lot of other factory synthetic stocks. I had a Winchester Extreme Weather before and I could never make myself like the B&C stock. It felt chunky to me. I also have a Ruger All Weather Hawkeye in 338 Federal. I like that one a lot too so I imagine the 30-06 model would be nice as well (if you can still find one).

Or a Howa and McMillian for the same.

The 77 is good if you want more heft. Rugr builds tanks and most of them shoot. I like the Model 70 as well or a little better, but I don't own any newer than 2008 vintage. Tikka is good and there are stock options to improve the ugly. I've re-stocked one and took a sander to another and hydro-dipped it. Good trigger and have yet to see one that wouldn't shoot.

I just bought a Model 700 SA (260) SPS after a long Remington hiatus. Trigger worked down nicely and it shoots MOA with a number of loads. My old SS model 700 in an Edge weighs just north of 7lbs all-up with a Leupy VX2 3-9.

But I like my Montana 308 at 6 pounds for hiking steep and far.

Savages shoot and used to be a decent choice before they got too proud of them and want as much now as companies making a good-looking rifle. YMMV.

If not,then Tikka. Carry it and rapidly put your eye up to the scope so you don't have to see how ugly it is. Or close them even.

Add the Ruger and Vanguard to your list and buy the one that feels best to you.

I don't have an All Weather .30-06 Hawkeye but I did buy an All Weather (stainless/synthetic) .280 Remington from cdnsports last year and it shoots very, very well. The walnut/blue Hawkeye .308W Daughter #1 bought from them this year also shoots very well.

Two of my synthetic/stainless Rugers are the MKII variety, a .30-06 that will be my primary elk rifle this year and a .338WM. My backup this year will be the All Weather Hawkeye in .280 Rem mentioned above. A few years ago I took the .338 and .30-06 to the range for a final scope check before elk season. With 5 shots I hit two clay pigeons on the 600 yard berm, taking three shots with one rifle and two with the other. The .280 Rem took my antelope this year at 373 yards. They shoot OK.

As others have said, the Hawkeye triggers are very easy to work on. The LC6 triggers are an improvement over the older Ruger triggers but I still touch mine up. I also float the barrels on all my walnut-stocked Rugers, haven't bothered doing so with the my 3 synthetic/stainless.

^^ This or a Kimber Montana. Or M-70 in a McM Edge as others have suggested..........I can't like the clubbiness of the factory Win EWR & the stock on the Shadow is pretty much junk.

Here's a Classic M-70 Sporter in a McM Edge Compact Classic with Conetrols & a Leupoled 2.5 x 8 & it weighs in at about 7-12. Balance is perfect.

MontanaMan - about 10 years ago I purchased a new HOWA M1500 SS sporter barreled action and an inexpensive Ramline stock. Redfield makes a pretty decent 3-9X scope. So, with Burris Signature "Z" rings on top of Weaver Grand Slam steel bases it came together rather nicely as a knock about jeep / loaner rifle. Accurate enough (1-1.5MOA)depending on my coffee intake that morning. Figure if HOWA's are good enough for Weatherby Vanguards it's good enough for me.

Whittaker's has the Hawkeye all-weather in 30-06 for $499. It's $599 on the site, but Darrick said in another thread the $499 is correct if you call, email or PM them, and they have 30-06 available.

Whittled it down to the Hawkeye All Weather 30-06 and the Winchester M70 Ultimate Shadow Stainless 30-06. Both new-in-box. Great price on the Hawkeye (I intend on this being a long-term rifle so cost is less consequential than making the right choice).

Am I good with either? If they were the same price, would the M70 be the clear winner? Whichever one I get will be wearing a McMillan by next fall.

Get the Ruger.....
