Both have been an anomaly to me as they both seemed an idea after the glory days of the lever action was past. I did get a Model 1895 in 40-72 and like it much more than I ever figured I would, as the 1895 never appealed to me with the box magazine and lines of a single barrel.

The 40-72 is now a favorite and I will be using it plenty in the future. The 71, however, has still not enticed me at all and even though I love the 1886, the 71 just doesn't do it.

I would stay away from a rebounding hammer on any one of these old rifles as they are almost as bad as a plastic stock. With so many good chamberings in 1886 rifles, I don't ever see me getting a 348...

Anyone try the Turnbull Fast fire mount. Looks pretty great to me.

I guess because it says Turnbull, it is great, but that certainly doesn't add to the appearance of the gun...

I have a 1903 5xxxx sn. M1895 in .30-40 Krag- it is the Sporting Rifle with the std. 24" round barrel, 100% as pictured on page 80 of the Schwing Pocket Guide book- published 2004 by Krause Publications- 90% original blue, no rust or pits, bore like a mirror, 95% shellac finish on buttstock and forearm- NO buggered or FUBARed screws, original steel crescent curve bp- No alterations from factory std (scope mounts, sling swivel studs, etc.) My 2014- 35th edition of the Blue Book (S.P. Fjestad) shows this in 90% condition as having a value of $4300- is this a realistic asking price today? I have fotos available, and also, for those who peruse the Cabela's Gun Library BBS- Cabela's Gun Library in Christiana DE has one almost identical to mine- except mine does NOT have the blueing wear on the receiver top bar, as does their M1895--reference number is 45903125. If you wish to see the fotos, send me a pm through this BBS-thanks for the input.

My favorite Winchesters are the 1895, 1886, 71, and 64. I haven't owned any yet, but all of the above are on my wish list (with the 95, 86 and 71 taking prescience)

I have 2 95 carbines, a 30-40 from central NH and a 303 that I bought in northern VT, but it came out of the Eastern Townships of southeastern QC. I don't really care for them, haven't shot either of them in at least 30 years.

I also have 4 71s, 2 deluxe rifles and 2 carbines. They were part of my Father's collection that I kept. They were in the collection for as long as I can remember and I'm pretty sure that they haven't been shot in over 50 years.
