Liberal majority....bad deal. Didn't care for any of the viable options this time round but would have prefered a minority Conservative I think. Alberta once again was pretty solid blue.

Bunch of fools to elect someone like Trudeau. I fear he will be our version of Obama. I remember how embarrassed I was to be a Canadian the last time the Liberals were in power.

Would be nice to separate from Canada from say Manitoba west and give them Vancouver as well........

I can not believe the results. I could have lived with a minority Lib govt if it came to that. A majority Lib govt once again scares me to death. Yes I was hoping for a Conservative majority.

You are quite right gerrygoat; He is going to be our Obama. I couldn't begin to count the times he used Obama catch lines and phrases throughout the campaign.

At least Alberta stayed true to the Conservative values!
Gonna be interesting to say the least!

He will be many times worse than Obama but to the news media, he will be able to do no wrong. Embarrassing to be governed by an entitled puppy. GD

Holy smokes isn't this enough to scare people off wow.. I thought Americans were bad when it came to free stuff...

Trudeau, who has re-energized the Liberal Party since its devastating electoral losses four years ago, promises to raise taxes on the rich and run deficits for three years to boost government spending.

Sounds like you guys are in for the same treatment we got the last 8yrs..

Trudeau's opponents pilloried him as too inexperienced, but Trudeau embraced his boyish image on Election Day. Sporting jeans and a varsity letter jacket, he posed for a photo standing on the thighs of two his colleagues to make a cheerleading pyramid, his campaign plane in the backdrop with "Trudeau 2015" painted in large red letters

Just like in America, a liberal landslide. Canada will follow America into financial ruin, under Trudeau.

wabigoon;
Top of the morning to you sir, I trust that this finds you and yours doing acceptably well.

Going into this election the Conservatives had more than their proverbial "work cut out for them" as there hasn't been anyone elected for a fourth term in the last century.

Among other things Mr. Harper was/is an astute student of history and he knew that full well. What he successfully did in my view, was leave the Conservative party with decent representation, with official opposition status and a full war chest for the next run.

In the main, Canadians and the news media in general didn't give Mr. Harper his due as far as how bright he is.

That said I sensed there'd be a change, but was of course hoping for less of a change than we've been handed.

Again, like in past elections, the power goes where Ontario and Quebec want it to and those of us living west of the Manitoba line vote out of a sense of duty - with full knowledge that the results are decided before we head to the polls after work..... not that we're frustrated by that in the least.

The low price of oil and minerals has definitely hurt our position at the table here now too I'd say and to some degree then the election.

Anyway I hope and pray I'm wrong in my assessment of Mr. Trudeau's ability to run anything larger than a ski class. If there was ever a time I hoped I'm wrong wabigoon - this is definitely it.

Sorry for the pensive reply this morning sir, I'm in a less optimistic mood than is typical. All the best to you and yours this week.

Dwayne

Change is coming, whether we like it or not.
For myself Trudeau inspires no confidence in his ability to lead the country well, or even just fair! I hope he proves that my concerns are unfounded, no doubt he will get 8 years to do that.
I can get really depressed if I think the democrats retain power in the US in their upcoming election. That would put our two countries on a course that does not bode well for our kids, and their kids.
On a more optimistic note (!) those of us on the wrong side of 50 need to enjoy and treasure the things we like to do, while we can.

alas I find that misery loves company, and it seems my Canadian brothers are in the same boat as their friends to the south (hey and west)

self reliance, initiative etc. are becoming passe values for many, particularly in urban areas

and some of it just makes sense.

when you have people stacked on top of one another like cord wood, there's probably a greater need or desire for central control.

as more and more folks crowd into cities, look for those qualities we respect in one another to fade as desired traits as to how one should conduct himself.

I've no doubt that if the grocery stores were to empty, my friend Dwayne and folks like him in more rural parts of Canada would figure out how to keep his family fed.

in Montreal, Toronto? NYC, Chicago, not so much.

there's dark days ahead for "pull your own weight" type folks

and if it has a chance to survive (other than small pockets) there's likely going to have to be some Balkinization that takes place. In both countries.

You Canadians I've met, particularly out west, as I traveled the Alcan or met you in Hawaii or Mexico or talk to on here.

you have my sympathy. I feel for you currently similar feelings I had for my own nation in 2012

I wish you and yours the very best, and at this point really all one can do is make sure that very small pocket one calls family and/or community is prepared to weather the storms ahead.

I've been treated very well by my Canadian friends and thus I always wish the very best for them.

I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

I found the media to be very pro Conservative. There were no reality checks. Harper governed for the Conservative Party ,the oil industry, and the rich, not for the majority of Canadians. The results reflect that.

Justin Trudeau is not his father, he's more like his grandfather, Jimmy Sinclair.

We will see if he can keep his promise, that he made at the beginning of his speech to govern like Sir Wilfred Laurier.

I don't know where you got this idea. In my opinion none of the media gave Harper credit for anything. He was not without flaws but no where did I see any acknowledgment of how well the Conservatives maintained our economy in comparison to other countries over the last several years.

I am certainly not rich but have seen my investments grow in value. There have been some exceptions since the setback in the oil industry, however, I believe that was beyond the control of any government.

Good Luck with your new PM and Liberal Government.

I pray for the sake of all Canadians and their allies that Trudeau the Second is nothing like Obama or perhaps even worse.

It's The Vancouver Sun. When the Liberals were last in power they were paying down the debt with surpluses. Never mentioned. Conservatives come in, true we were in the recession of '08, but they borrowed money to give tax breaks to the rich. This is good fiscal management? The paper claimed it was !

Job creation, percentage wise, only R.B.Bennett was worse in the last 100 years. That one got no play.

A kid washes up ashore, you know the background on that story, the paper runs an article saying ignore that.

I guess I should have said Postmedia, eh.

This is an Ontario issue. You are from Ontario, aren't you? Suddenly, when we are in mild recession last summer ,just before the election call, the Tories announce they are going to help the manufacturing sector. Good, but where were they in the last 10 years. Had they been doing that we wouldn't have been in recession. Ontario should be booming if the States are.

Interestingly enough the new Liberal government does not represent the majority of Canadians either with only 39% of the total vote. Conservatives were only less than 8% behind but fill far fewer seats in parliament.

Last election there was a great cry for proportional representation by total votes received... don't hear that from Liberal or NDP supporters this time around... smile
