Have any of you mounted a Leupold 1.5 - 5x on a No. 1 and found it didn't have enough eye relief for you at 5x? Any vintage: Vari-X III, VX-III or VX-3?

Nope. I do use Ruger offset rings on mine, FWIW. 1.5-5x VX3

I just got an Eabco scope base for my RSI #1 with rear rib mounted sight. I'm going to cut the base off in front of the sight, using 3 instead of 4 attachment screws. I'll post photos when I get it done.

The rib is Picatinny/Weaver compatible and raises the base, so I'm going to use low Weavers. I think that combo will be close to Ruger Med. which seems about right to me.

DF, I'll be interested in how you like that.

I have an older Vari-X III 1.5-5 and can make it work with standard rings but feel like I'm stretching to get proper eye relief. I went to a rear offset ring with that scope and all other scopes on Ruger No. 1's...

I have used an offset ring on the rear with both a Vari-X II 1.5-5x and a Vari-X III 1.5-6x on Ruger No. 1s. Not necessary with just a shirt, but it makes the rifle much more useable with cold weather hunting clothes.

Really? I was figuring that they wouldn't be needed.

Using two offset rings is as much for appearance, as anything. I do prefer the look of both rings offset.

One downside is the Ruger offsets are relatively heavy.

I like that look.

I went a different route, got the EABCO Ruger #1 Weaver/Picatinny base that fits over the quarter rib. The Ruger rib is attached by 4 hex head screws. EABCO furnishes 4 longer hex head screws to replace the Ruger screws.

I cut the base right behind the rear sight, so I could only use 3 of their 4 screws. I had low Weaver rings (.090") on hand which kept the scope at approximately Ruger medium ring height, maybe slightly higher.

I like my scopes set back a bit. With my heads up cheek weld this works out well. It may not look as sleek as the set back rings, but is lighter, the base is aluminum, Weaver rings are pretty light.

You have some cervical vertebrae fused or something? grin That ocular lens would be just in front of my right ear.

Another view.

BTW, this is an older VX-III 1.5-5. I think the VX-3 is better, this one isn't bad.

smile With Loopeys I normally set the rear of the scope about even with the safety, and it works okay for me. So far I have not been scoped, even shooting the .475 off the bench, with loads that approach a .470 Nitro

All depends where you place your face on the stock, but I didn't have an issue using a Leupold 1-4x on a couple Ruger #1s in standard low rings. The 1.5-5 would have worked just as well for me.

I'm not a stock crawler, just the opposite. It works OK for me with my more erect cheek weld, gives a full field of view.

It does look sorta weird; reminds me of high Euro cantilevered scope mounts with the scope hanging way over center.

I haven't shot it yet, just traded for it last week. It's an '81 vintage, has the two screw trigger. Someone must have worked on this trigger. For a #1, it's very nice 3 #'s, good enough that I'm not going to mess with it.

BTW, it's an '06 with perfect bore thru the Hawkeye. This vintage has the Wilson barrel. Wood is nice, not exceptional, but with a touch of grain.

I also have an older 1.5-5 Leupold on my RSI and on an old one on a 1B. With a light shirt I am right at the limit of not crawling up the stock at 2.5. Anything over that and your crawling. At 5x it is doable with a light shirt. In cold weather with a heavy wool coat it isn't usable at anything over about 3x. The offset rings look like the way to go.

I like the looks of the offset rings.

My set up isn't the prettiest concoction I've ever assembled... blush

It seems to work, although I haven't shot it yet.
