My 6 yr old Great Grand Daughter has been bothering me about a bow for about a month. I'm not a bow person, so what do I do? She can handle a 20lb pull at 21". Do I get a recurve or a compound?

Nowadays they make compound bows than can be adjusted as your child grows. Genesis or something similar comes to mind. I'm sure several manufacturers are catering to kids. Tom

The mission Craze II (I just bought one myself and I love it) comes in all black and I think even some pink and orange camo patterns. Draw lengths from 19"-31" and weights from (I think) 15-70 lbs. I love mine. More costly than a true kids bow but she could truly use it for years!

When my kid wanted to start bow hunting I bought him a Parker Buckshot. I don't know if they still make it or not. It came with 40# limbs and we dialed it back to about 30#. It has adjustable draw length in the cams. As he got bigger, I had the bow shop crank up the poundage and adjusted the draw length. Then when he grew out of that, I had them put 50# limbs on it for about $50.00. Started at 40# and worked our way up to 50#, adjusting the draw length along the way. He killed 3 deer with it. After that, I found a used Mathews Black Max that had 60# limbs on it with a set of 70# limbs that came with it. He still has the Mathews and with the 70# limbs, that thing shoots 280fps.

Well, My Grandson decided to order Ava a recruve from Maddog Traditional Archery. The arrows and other acessories were ordered from Three Rivers Archery. I understand that a recruve may be harder to learn with, but it will help us see if see is as interested as she seems. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Maddog makes a terrific traditional bow for kids.

Never mind kids bows at 600ish bucks. Nuts. But nothing is cheap.. Compared to a Rem 700 on sale at 299 though it makes one gag....

A 6 year old would not enjoy a 3.5 lb bare bow Craze II.
Ava will have a blast with the Maddog recurve (maybe 15-16oz bow).
Accuracy isn't important right now. Watching arrows fly is important. At that age, my nephews and grandkids learned more about shooting and form with distance contests, not target practice.

Thanks for the replies. Even as a 6yr. old, Ava has been steeped in her Choctaw Heritage. She treasures her blood card. I have an old Choctaw bow that was used for hunting from a horse. It is Osage Orange and has a sinew string. She keeps an eye on it. Her idea of a bow is a conventional bow. If her interest continues and she wants something else, I will provide it. She really likes these pictures that my Buddy sends. My great loss was when my internet provider disappeared I lost both my address book and saved emails. I have Pat's photos, but the most valuable thing I lost was his story of each kill. He made you feel like you were walking beside him.
