If a guy had a stock Remington in something like a 280 rem with 22" barrel, if he put it in a McM Edge, used a blind mag, Talley LW, and a reasonable Leupy scope - what would it weigh when done?

I may know where a great looking m700 280 rem is hiding at a good price <G>

My 22" Rem 700 243AI in a McM Edge Mtn Rifle Stock, with a dupe of the Mtn Rifle bbl, weighs 7lb 6oz with 3 in the belly, DNZ mounts, and a Leupold 6x42 w/ target turrets. That includes a rather heavy sling and swivels.

I could easily reduce that to around 7lbs if I'd go with a lighter sling, aluminum trigger guard, aftermarket shroud and pin, and Talleys.

b: Back in the 80's we'd take a 270 or 280 Remington Mountain rifle, drop it in a Brown Precision FG stock, slap on a 4X or 6X and go hunting. I KNOW the outfit weighed under 7 pounds.

I gave one of these to a rancher friend in Wyoming back around 1983 or so. It must have 40+ elk to its credit now,and more big mule deer than most of us have even seen.Biggest MD is over 200 and the biggest bull over 360.

No blueing left on the barrel and the stock paint is worn through to the fiberglass ,the fixed 4X is scratched and out dated. But it still kills and shoots.

I bought a "spare" which sits at the ranch, but we have never needed it.

Looks like a guy can get to 7 - 7.25 lbs pretty easy with a M700 build. I've had several M700 through the years and they tended to run a bit lighter than the M70/M98 in final config. I owned a 7 SAUM in a M700 BDL at one time - wish I still had that rifle...........

I think I need a 0.284 caliber to make a good mtn rifle. A 270 would work as well but I have a bunch of 7mm bullets and dies for several 7mm cartridges. I'm also a 280 fan. I've owned one since 1982 and have alot of confidence in it. I'm chewing on a Montana in 280 AI but a plain 280 wouldn't suck either.

I'm still chewing on possibilities - at least until I sell one of the rifles I have for sale. I still really like the Montana 280 AI idea alot but want to think about using an M700 as it seems that building on M700 gets me to the same place with likely a few more options and aftermarket ideas.

I really like the builds you guys have posted. The 6.5x284 is very interesting. I like the 284 win alot. Tanner's 6.5 SAUM is another interesting cartridge. I think the 7mm 145 LRX/150 LRAB is in the same league.

I have a Rem 700 rechambered to .284Win in a Brown stock. It has a compact Leupold 2X7. With nylon sling and ammo, it weighs 7 1/4 pounds. It is nicely balance and not a whippy barrel. It sure is nice to carry.

Pretty darn close. Here is my 30-06 700 in an edge. It does have the factory bottom metal and a 24" barrel.

Built a M700 30-06 in the 80's. With BDL floor plate and no metal work in a syn stock and a VX-2 3-9 Compact it's 7 1/2 lbs.
The stock has been worn and repainted so many times it probably has 1/4 lb of paint on it by now.
