Anchorage schools are opening two hours late amid a slippery commute Monday as the city recovers from a dump of snow that also hit parts of the Mat-Su overnight.
As of 7:45 a.m., Anchorage police spokeswoman Anita Shell said dispatchers had received reports of 11 accidents and two accidents with injuries -- almost all of them in town -- as well as 27 vehicles in distress.

“Of the vehicles in distress, almost all of those are on the Glenn Highway,” Shell said. “People are slipping, sliding and crashing into each other.”
Shell said police were encountering very icy conditions on the Glenn inbound from the highway’s North Eagle River exit.
According to the Anchorage School District’s Facebook page, high schools will open at 9:30 a.m., with middle schools opening at 10:15 a.m. and elementary schools opening at 11 a.m.
“School will get out at the normal time today,” ASD officials wrote.
District spokeswoman Heidi Embley said that school bus service has also been delayed two hours to accommodate the delayed school start times.
Camp Fire Alaska said Monday that its before-school and after-school programs would be operating on their regular schedule Monday, despite ASD's delayed start for the day.
A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service for the Southcentral region, in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through 3 a.m. Monday, had called for heavy snow with limited visibility overnight.
“A potent storm system will bring heavy snow to Anchorage and the Mat-Su Sunday through Sunday night,” forecasters wrote. “The worst and longest-lived conditions will be in the Susitna Valley, with some of the heaviest snow expected along the Parks Highway corridor.”
Ken Barkley, Mat-Su Emergency Services deputy director, said crews had responded to several collisions, none of them serious. Those included a T-bone collision on Knik-Goose Bay Road near Settlers Bay Road, as well as a bus in a ditch in the West Lakes area.
"We've got about 6 inches of snow this morning," Barkley said.

Michael Kutz, a forecaster in the Anchorage NWS office, said urban snowfall reports ranged from 2.2 inches in Anchorage to 2.5 inches in Palmer. Farther north, the weather service had received reports of 6 inches of snowfall along parts of the Parks Highway and 9 inches in Willow.
Mat-Su Borough School District spokeswoman Catherine Esary said no delayed school openings or closures were in effect.
“We are open and we might expect some slight delays with the bus routes, but we are open and as on-time as possible,” Esary said.
While Kutz didn’t call road conditions dangerous, he urged drivers across Southcentral to exercise caution on morning commutes.
“It’s one of those you definitely want to take it easy on,” Kutz said. “Temps are hovering just above freezing -- where places are plowed are slick, so when you hit the gas you’re not going to go.”
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District reported on its Facebook page that two schools -- Soldotna Elementary and Soldotna Montessori -- were closed due to a power outage.
"All other KPBSD schools are open on a normal schedule," district officials wrote..
Monday’s NWS forecast for Southcentral Alaska calls for partly sunny skies with scattered snow showers and high temperatures in the mid-30s, giving way to mostly cloudy skies and continuing snow showers with lows in the upper teens to mid-20s by evening.
Going forward Monday, Kutz said, the forecast didn’t call for significant additions to those snowfall totals during the day.
“We’re probably not going to see all that much extra,” Kutz said. “(We’re) probably going to see a couple more inches in the low-lying areas and probably Palmer and Wasilla, and probably 1 to 2 more as you go up into the Parks.”
