$50 is easy, heck now days you can find a good knife for $25-30.

For a do everything knife ( meaning cutting rope, skinning wires, scrapping gunk out of something, and even slicing spam) I like the Ontario RAT 2 folders. You won't find a bad review about it. The rat 1 is a larger version.

I've been carrying a Spyderco Tenacious everyday for the past two years. I beat the shyt out of my EDC at work and the Tenacious lives up to it's name.

Buck also makes a folder with a pocket clip for a good price. I carry a Swiss Army farmer model, it's around 40 bucks. Handiest knife I have ever owned.
