But a buddy has always neck sized his and never had an issue...

yes, but I "partial resize" - I measure fired cases, and adjust the sizer so the shoulder is only pushed back very slightly, no more than .002".

I measure the headspace from fired brass for whatever gun I'm loading for & size the brass to .002-.003" below that number.
FL sizing, no partials on an AR.

CCI 41's or BR4's as 1st choice.
Rem 7 1/2's 2nd choice.

What primers do you guys like? CCI 450's for ball powders, 400's for stick powders.

CCI 450, CCI 41, CCI BR, Rem 7 1/2, Wolf/Tula whatever their primers are with the thick cups.
Any American primer I didn't mention has thin cups.

Because AR's get dirty and need some wiggle room in the headspace area to insure reliability. With a bolt gun it's not as big of a deal because you can muscle a tight chamber. With an AR, you have to stop and manually cycle the bolt or beat in the forward assist.
I FL resize everything. Don't confuse that with sizing to SAAMI specs, I just always bump shoulders back at least ,001" to ensure reliable feeding and chambering.

Over works the brass. I load for 4 different AR's and a Mini 14 and have never needed a small base die. If you don't have a tight chamber it's not called for.

I have one AR barrel that did need a small base die until it wore in. Now it's fine with standard FL resized loads so now the SB die just sits in the box.

Everything that gets reloaded for my ARs goes through a small base die.
Brass is cheap.
I could wish a lot of things on my worst enemy but neuropathy ain't one of them.
