SHOT Show

  • WEBINAR WEDNESDAY: IMPROVING EXHIBIT STAFF PERFORMANCE . . . Trade show expert Jefferson Davis of Competitive Edge will present "Secrets of the Aisles: Improving SHOT Show Exhibit Staff Performance." One of the key reasons attendees go to shows is to interact with and evaluate the people behind the brands. Your exhibit staff can make or break your success. This free SHOT Show exhibitor webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 2 to 2:45 p.m. EST. Learn more.
  • GLOCK SPONSORS 2016 NSSF/HAVA GOLF CLASSIC . . . GLOCK has joined the growing list of 2nd Annual NSSF/HAVA Golf Classic sponsors at the Bronze level. For more information and to register for this event, visit shotshow.org/golf.

Government Relations

  • NEW JERSEY LEGISLATORS WANT TO SWAP SMART GUN MANDATES . . . Legislators in New Jersey seem ready to replace one failed state mandate with another one. State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, sponsor of the original New Jersey "Smart Gun" mandate law, has introduced legislation to repeal the original mandate and instead force firearms retailers to carry at least one model of an authorized-user technology-equipped firearm in their inventory. NSSF is urging all New Jersey retailers and gun owners to express your opposition to this attempt to create an artificial market. Read more.
  • STATE ROUND-UP . . . Cook County (Illinois) commissioners are seeking to pass Ordinance 15-6469, the Firearm Ammunition Tax, which would be effective June 1, 2016, and would impose a tax on the retail purchase of ammunition. A Baltimore Sun statehouse reporter finally took note of Maryland's failed 15-year experiment in ballistic imaging, but the editors couldn't leave it there—the paper's editorial page decided that perhaps the state should take a look at following California and consider implementing microstamping technology, which itself is beset with problems and unworkable. NSSF has filed a friend-of-the-court (amicus) brief with the Missouri Supreme Court in the case of Delana v. CED Sales. Read NSSF's latest Government Relations Update for more details.

Research

  • USITC FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION DATA FOR SEPTEMBER 2015 . . . NSSF tracks and reports monthly U.S. import and export units for several sporting arms, ammunition and optics categories from the U.S. International Trade Commission. See a complete breakdown for September 2015 compared to September 2014, in addition to third quarter (July-September) figures. NSSF members may access additional historical import and export data by logging in and clicking NSSF Industry Research.

Retailers/Ranges

  • 2016 SHOT SHOW RETAILER SEMINAR: 'FBI/NICS TOWN HALL MEETING' . . . With the New NICS E-Check 2.0 now set to debut in January, NSSF is encouraging all retailers to attend the very special 2016 SHOT Show Retail Seminar entitled "FBI/NICS Retailer Town Hall Meeting." The seminar will cover an overview of the current NICS operations to include increases and trends as they relate to transaction volumes at the national level. Most importantly it will spotlight the exciting implementation of the New NICS and E-Check 2.0.
  • 2016 SHOT SHOW RETAILER SEMINAR: 'MEDIA TRAINING – EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED' . . . In our politically charged environment, your firearms retail store is a prime candidate for on-the-spot interviews and use as a backdrop for both local and national news outlets. Do you have a plan in place for working with the reporters, journalists, editors and producers of today's press corps? If you don't, then you need to include attending the Retailer Seminar "Media Training—Expecting the Unexpected" in your 2016 SHOT Show planning.
  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks about the use of a customer's social security card without government-issued photo identification. Another question asks about the use of a passport during a firearm transaction.
  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . NSSF has partnered with a U.S.-based company to provide its range members with a substantial discount on a specialized fresh-air filtration system. Developed specifically for indoor ranges, these industry-leading ventilation systems work with 100-percent treated fresh air, rather than recycled and treated exhausted air, to provide a system that's 100-percent OSHA- and EPA-compliant. News of Note

  • WAYS TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN NEW HUNTERS . . . NSSF recently began presenting a series of articles to help manufacturers, retailers, wildlife management agencies, tourism departments and others in the hunting community better understand their hunting customers. The latest article discusses three classifications of hunters — new, intermittent and regular — and analyzes the correlation of license sale trends between the categories to provide answers for recruiting and retaining new hunters. Read more.
  • NO GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC . . . On CNSNews.com, writer Jason Snead lays out the facts to refute a favorite narrative of the gun-control crowd—the notion that the United States is experiencing a gun violence epidemic. Violent crime has been falling the last two decades, Snead notes, though media preoccupation with covering crime leads Americans to "consistently overestimate the violent crime rate." NSSF's infographic, "Gun Crimes Plummet Even as Gun Sales Rise," in print and in video version, also helps set the record straight.
  • HANCOCK NOMINATED FOR OLYMPIC ATHLETE OF THE YEAR . . . Two-time Olympic gold medalist and USA Shooting athlete Vincent Hancock is in the running for the U.S. Olympic Committee's Male Athlete of the Year. Hancock is an exemplary representative of the shooting sports, and this is a great chance to show support for him. Log on to TeamUSA.org/Awards to cast your vote up until 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 20. Read more.
  • NSSF ONLINE NEWSROOM A FINALIST . . . In the prestigious PR News Digital Awards, the National Shooting Sports Foundation was named one of three finalists in the Online Newsroom category. NSSF's information-rich newsroom at nssf.org/newsroom shared finalist honors with the work of the biotechnology firm Genentech, which worked with the large public relations firms Weber Shandwick and FleishmanHillard to create its site, and insurance giant Aetna.
  • NSSF IN THE NEWS . . . The Wall Street Journal, Guns.com, Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Gunmag and many other news outlets across the country included NSSF in their coverage in recent days. Popular topics included industry trends, government relations, ATF/NSSF Matching Rewards program and more. View a full wrap-up of NSSF in the News.
