Had to pull out of Maine early due to a bad cold. But not before I killed a 10 pointer that dressed 210. So I get another patch from the State of Maine. He showed pretty suddenly,as they always do,and all I could see was the top third of the body. High shoulder shot, off hand at 70-80 yards broke his back. Lung shot to finish. 270-130 Partition, Same old/same old. Complete penetration. When I left there had been 4 (!) bucks over 200 pounds dressed weight killed in the first day and a half. They had started to move! Gotta love Maine!

I got my Maine Patch in 1974 when I harvested a massive palmated 11 pointer that field dressed 254#, my biggest buck to date. It was my second trip to Maine and the only buck I saw in ten days of hunting.

Nice work Bob, sounds like a pig of a buck, we'll look forward to a picture.....to think a .270 even works on 200+ lbs deer. Last week my neighbor dropped a 10 pt. that dressed @ 253!

Randy I have to admit he fooled me. He appeared suddenly, moving in high grass and I could not see much of the rack or body.I thought he was a 160-170 pound 6 point.
I got surprised in a good way!

Killed this one Monday morning at about 8:45am. Used the Winchester Featherweight 7x57 with a old 4x Weaver and a 160 gr Sierra GK. Shot was longer than yours, about 110 yds.

Bob, Sorry to hear about the cold thing as I'm guessing the hunt could have been a lot more fun without it. You certainly did well with such a nice looking buck. Not sure I'm buying the 270 thing though, that deer is leaking blood. The pic with the deep grass & brush could pass for a pic in a KS river bottom.

Ken nice work! That buck looks like tender vittles!
6.5: That particular cut is surrounded by miles....and miles....and miles of heavy hard/soft wood forest, mountains to swamps, clear cuts, and logged areas of all ages and sizes. There are open areas that can offer some long shots but mostly about 300 max.
That buck came off a runway used by does. 2 weeks ago I doubt I'd have caught him there but with the does coming into heat I suspect he was checking for something in estrus. Or possible a hot doe went through there earlier.
Important thing is he was on the move. Which is what helps.

I kind of guessed that must have been some kind of clear cut. The descriptions I've heard and seen pics of is heavy timber, lots of it.

BTW, for those interested, we weighed that buck before field dressing and he was just under 250 pounds.
On our scale and the state scales at the check station he weighed 210 dressed weight.
My buddy killed one that afternoon that weighed 274 pounds OTH. Field dressed he was 228.

Bob, We used to kill some good deer in and around clearcuts in northern WI until some geniuses put a moratorium on cutting in the national forests. Combine that with people believing one can't kill deer unless they're guarding a corn pile and its made much of our northern zone a waste land for deer hunting.

Interesting stats on live weight and field dressed it pretty much mirrors the formula I use which is a factor of 120. 120 x 210# = 252# 120 x 228# = 274#

More times than not, bucks are on the move and you gotta be ready. Here's to hoping your luck (and skill of course) hold out for the rest of your hunts!

Awesome deer, Bob. Usually you hear people complain about "ground shrinkage" upon approaching a buck. I bet it sure is nice to have it the other way!
Never heard of a Maine Patch buck before. Anyone care to explain?

Clearcuts are GOOD down South too. Depending on how 'clean' they are, after 2-3 yrs the new growth is large enuff for bedding as well as food. I've killed lots of deer in ccs. Congrats on a HOG like that. But I thot 270s 'bounce off' deer, at least on the Campfire! Jerry

THNX roundoak - I normally weigh mine whole and you'll get VERY close to the same 'dressed' weight IF - 252 X .835 = 210.42 274 X .835 = 228.79 Easy to figure both ways. Jerry

I hunted the Oxbow area in Aroostook County near Lake Umcolcus, took my buck as he was crossing a log yard on Great Northern Paper Company land. My guide was a cruiser/surveyor for the paper company and owned a camp in the area, therefor he was really familiar with the territory. He had seen big bucks frequenting the area and was a great help in putting me in productive territory in the big woods.

Awesome deer, Bob. Usually you hear people complain about "ground shrinkage" upon approaching a buck. I bet it sure is nice to have it the other way!
Never heard of a Maine Patch buck before. Anyone care to explain? Azar: In Maine, if you kill a buck that field dresses in excess of 200 pounds, the State of Maine gives you a red patch, shaped like Maine. It says "Biggest Bucks in Maine Club". The only way into the club is to kill a 200 pound plus buck. It's a Maine hunting tradition going back for years, the emphasis always having been on the weight of a buck. Every Maine deer hunter knows about this and the Holy Grail of Maine deer hunting is killing a buck big enough to qualify for The Patch. There is also a yellow patch provided by the Maine Antler and Skull Trophy Club, giving emphasis to the size of the antlers. This is not state sponsored, but is like B&C with minimum scores in the typical/NT category. People sew these patches onto their hunting jackets and keep them for years. My last patch buck qualified on both counts;232# dressed and the 10th largest typical taken in the state that season. That was awhile back. I have no idea what percentage of the harvest each year is comprised of bucks dressing over 200 pounds.....but it is small. A patch is very hard to get. What will kill you is how many bucks dress in the 175-190 pound range and are certainly "big" by any standard. But they aren't 200 pounds....

Congrats Bob.
Maine is a place I would like to hunt someday. I always wanted to kill a deer in the big timber.

Guys thanks to one and all! I figured folks would get a kick out of the meat pole pictures... It's funny to watch...everyone can be cold, wet,and tired but when a big buck comes in they will leave dinner and go back outside to help or watch with the weigh-in. It's festive having lots of other hunters around. powdr yes that is some of the Maine country the Benoits have hunted. There and over west to Rangely. You see that country with mountains and miles of unbroken timber, gives you an appreciation for how good those boys are to ferret a big buck from that country. battue: Thanks and the shot is typical for that country (as you know). You have to shoot them right now because they will be gone and will not offer a better chance. WCH: Thanks! It's a sharp contrast to Wyoming....you can't see as far! But both are great in their own ways. Dink/1911: Everyone who loves to hunt deer deserves a Maine hunt! It is tough but it is some place special with great tradition. It's fun. Charlie Fox trot: I think I'm gonna sew my patches on. Never did before, but at my age I figure I earned them now. 7mm/keystone/moosemike: Thanks! Mike the problem with having too many rifles is you can only hunt with one at a time! I'm sure i could have made that shot with the 280.

I got curious about this so googled up some kill statistics published by the Maine Sportsman. Near as I could tell, there were 342 bucks killed that qualified for the patch in 2013.Out of a total estimated harvest of some 22,000 deer.
This is not to say the number could have been much higher(maybe double?) because 200 pound bucks could have been killed but not registered in the program by the hunters (you fill out a card and submit it, Some hunters might not care).
Highest number I saw was 772 bucks out of a harvest of some 36,000 animals.Seems the number of 200# bucks taken each year comprises about 1.5% to 2.5% of the total harvest, according to stats that I saw.

Hey Bob, Just saw this. That's a dandy! Way to go! We have one in camp so far. My buddy shot a tender 118lb spike on the Pittsburg/Clarksville town line Tuesday afternoon. I missed a size medium the same morning. Headed out the door in a few minutes to get in front of the rain this morning.
Hope the cold is better and the trip to KS as fruitful as the one to Maine.

Dink: The state has a population estimated at 203,000 (last numbers I heard). Typical of northern New England we have severe winter weather and deer depend on winter yarding areas for survival in deep snow conditions. Winter mortality is not unusual. Mix in the predators and the hunting, and a Maine deer has a pretty tough existence. But these same conditions are what gives the deer their size. Plus, this is not farm country in the same sense as Missouri and the mid west. The deer are primarily forest animals. It all adds up to very tough hunting conditions...low deer density in many areas, huge unbroken expanses of forest (except for logging activity),and very smart animals who know how to avoid hunters and are swallowed up in wilderness conditions. This equals low harvest, low success rates, and tough hunting. Not like the deer-rich environments of the south and mid west. I've seen guys from those areas show up here and quit after 2 days because they didn't see a deer behind every bush. If that's what a guy wants, he should not come to Maine. It's big woods hunting. You will work a week to 10 days for one crack at a buck...if you even get that.

Nice deer Bob.
Lots of 200+ slobs hitting the dirt this year. Had a customer at work get one 277 dressed.
The patch still eludes me.

That meat pole is impressive. Haven't seen those kinda pics from Maine since my grandfather and uncles used to go up 25 years or so ago. Congrats Bob, a fine achievement well appreciated by the others who have a sat and waited, deerless, talking to themselves...

Tom thanks! I know that feeling, sitting in a stand deer less, all too well
Five bucks over 200 pounds, in two days,is something I have not seen in a long time up there.
For a couple of years in the early 70's, I hunted the Monticello area and would stay from Nov.1 until Thanksgiving. Really that's the last time I saw something similar to this.

Congratulations Bob! Love the meat pole pic. I've been hunting in Maine for over 30 years and still no patch. I've seen them over 200 lbs on meat poles and in the back of trucks and at the check stations, but none have walked in front of me on the hoof just yet. A close friend had one come in at 196 lbs! I joke about being very "judicious" in my field dressing technique on one that might come close. You never know!

Many people who hunt hard and diligently up there have never seen one. Stories of close calls, freeze ups, buck fever, tiny wrong moves and general malaise in the presence of those animals, run rampant. Stories galore. Seeing one is a real chore in those big woods. Killing them is something else and often just as hard.. Don't know if I mentioned it, but when that buck walked out, I could only see one side of the rack (not real well),and thought he was a 160 pound 6 point-type buck. I killed him pretty quick...I was not " trophy hunting" . I got a surprise when I walked up on him. He was a much bigger buck than I originally thought. I hit the perfect storm. When they are close in weight, field dress gently!

Dink It's different up here. The whole NH deer herd is estimated at ~74,000. Closest I've come to 200 was an 8 pointer I popped when I was 16 that went 192, but that was an NH buck, not a Mainer.

Just back from hunting deer in South Dakota and saw the headline... Congrats on a dandy buck!! It is not often you see five deer over 200 pounds on a meatpole anywhere. That is quite a feat to say the least. There are a ton of guesstimates over 200, but to put them on the scale and actually attain that weight is rare to say the least. Then to put five of them up is unreal. I have to say when I saw the thread before opening it I was cheering for the .280....

Mike it was pretty astonishing. Of course all were weighed as they must be in Maine,so no guesstimates. I underestimated mine, figuring him at 185-190 dressed. Just got the final report as everyone in my party is headed home. Of the 5 of us, three killed bucks over 200; one saw and passed a smaller 6 point in the 150-160 pound range. The other saw a big buck traveling in the wood line on the cut,too far back in to risk a shot through the trees. So we were 5 for 5 on sightings of legal bucks for the week. Two PA guys killed the other two 200 pounders. One of that group wounded a buck yesterday. They are looking for him. Don't have the full story. The 280 got zeroed and came along. If I were not revving up for Kansas I would be in NH and would take it. I lugged the 270 in Maine because it's new, too and needed to blood the thing. Next stop......Wichita!

Danged old .270s anyway, you should know by now that they never work on a deer......................
At least, neither of mine did this year, I had to switch to a .30/30 to let them take a breather. Oddly enough, it worked, too.

Great buck!

Great buck Bob... outstanding group success. Maine is not a simple place to kill bucks...

Nice deer! Regarding clearcuts, here in northern NJ a new pipeline was installed. When the work was done, the state made the pipeline company replant the work area with trees....how stupid can you get? Northern NJ hills are climax forests, need cutting to get some light down on the ground.

Thanks Brad! You know the area well.... what it's like up there. No doubt we hit it just right with a dose of luck to boot.
JerseyBoy: Not a smart move. But then I hear Jersey has a pile of deer!

Jerseyboy: I worked for that pipeline company and tried to fight the state and feds on the replanting as well as defending our mowers for cutting some of those trees by mistake. Glad to have retired as I was sick of dealing with those dipshits!

Good grief! How'd I miss this? You must have posted it when I was hunting.
Congrats, Bob! That's a huge buck!

Nice buck Bob, can't wait to hear how it goes in Kansas!
Hunting Maine and Kansas might be a slight change of scenery.

SamO. There could not be a greater contrast in hunts than between Maine and Kansas! But they are still whitetails .
