Winchester model 70 "Westerner" .243 Win, my very first "deer rifle" and the one that started my obsession with spiral bores. It was a Christmas present from my parents in 1981. Earlier this fall, I pulled it out of the safe and realized it had been about 15 years since I had killed a deer with it and at least 5 since I had even hunted with it, so I carried it this weekend hoping to slay another deer with it, but it wasn't to be. I most often reach for something more exotic to hunt with these days. This rifle is neither exotic nor fancy, and it is easily one of the most mundane rifles I own, but it means the world to me because my parents knew I was lusting for my very own deer rifle and they made it happen, even though they probably couldn't afford it. Even though I didn't shoot a deer with it this weekend, I just enjoyed being back in the woods with it and thinking back to the big grin my dearly departed Dad had on his face as I unwrapped it on Christmas morning 34 years ago. ![[Linked Image]](http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx201/markcloer/DSC07625_zpsga8gi6ls.jpg)

Almost perfect treestand rifle for Volunteer State Highland Rim Swamp Transition Area. Sat on stand for Five hours this a.m. W this elderly TC Carbine w 16-in. Threaded .300 Blackout MGM bbl. Youth stock and Silencerco Harvester. No joy in Mudville, but saw a bobcat too far away to shoot scurrying back to swamp, 2 Redtail Hawks trying to make baby raptors, crows mock fighting, squirrels courting, geese flying 15 yards over my head, etc. Good morning with temps in low 20s for half the morning. Son & I saw multiple does, but had made buck only pledge. Be in stands again on Thanksgiving. Just got this one scoped, length of pull chopped down to 13" overall (did it myself) and need to lighten the trigger just a tad before sighting it in. This is in .243 and will make a great light do all rifle. For Deer to varmints anyways here in the South East. Just posted this in the Deer Hunting thread. Custom .270 that has served me well for the last 25 years, but it's going to my son-in-law for his Christmas gift this year. Made some meat with the old .243 this evening. Very fat doe at about 170 yards with some 20+ year old PMC factory loads.
