Just bought a DPMS A-15 with detachable carrying handle/rear sight.

Does anyone know what ammo I should stay away from (i.e problems cycling, etc) with this model? The barrel is stamped 5.56 1-9 (which I assume means it has a fairly fast rate of twist), and the receiver is stamped with .223/5.56.

I am figuring staying with 55 gn bullets is probably the safest bet.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

55gn will be fine. It should do really well with 62gn bullets also.

I wouldn't feed my gun any steel case ammo. Very hard on barrels.

I also would avoid shooting steel case stuff. It usually isn't very accurate and is dirty and rough in your chamber.

Any .223 or 5.56 ammo in the 45-70gr range should work fine in the 9 twist. You may even get 75gr Hornadys to shoot, try and see.

I went to the range yesterday and shot 40 rounds of CBC M193 ball (55 gn). It shot perfectly without any cycling problems.

It took me two 3-shot groups to get it sighted in (I was on an indoor range -25 yards max) and after that I was able to shoot the rest at about 1 sec per shot (that's about how long it takes me to recover from recoil and get back on target) and I finished with a fist-sized oval with one or two fliers.

I sighted in using the small peep and went to the larger peep for my "defensive" shooting drill.

Couldn't be more happier with the gun and the way it handled the cheap ammo ($18.00 for 50).

Remington UMC ammo is particularly sucky. A friend of my son had bought a new AR 15 and a box of the UMC 55s. The gun was misfeeding badly. He asked my son to take a look at it and see what was wrong. One look at the ammo and Micah handed the guy a mag of our handloads. Flawless performance.

LH,

I have heard that ARs can be quite picky about which ammo they digest.

For my needs, the cheapo CBC's should be good enough, as I don't plan on using the DPMS as a sniper rifle.

Getting back to Remington, I had to return a box of .416 Rem Mag to them due to various holes in the neck of the bullets.

They sent me a replacement box which wasn't much better. The cases had numerous dents, etc.

Now I always open a box of ammo (or have the sales clerk open it) before I pay for it, although I have never had any problem with Winchester ammo.
