I'm ordering a set of Talley LW's for a pre-64 and I have four ridiculous questions:
1. What does it mean on the Talley website when it says "mag"? My rifle is a standard .270.
2. What are "extended" bases?
3. The scope will be a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10 x 40. Would I need extended bases? 4. The current bases on the rifle extend over the ejection port, which I don't like. Will the Talleys fit flush?
Thanks, and have a happy Thanksgiving.

GA, you shouldn't need extended bases as I believe your scope has plenty of tube length. The magnum length M70 actions have different rear bridge hole spacing, your does not, so yes the standard will work for you. The talleys will fit flush. I believe the talley p/n you want is 930702. I have them on many of my pre 64 M70's and have been very happy with them.

GA, handwerk is right, with a 3.5-10X40 you wouldn't really need the extended set but what I use on mine is the LWs with the front mount extended back 1/4". On the regular set the front mount has a space between the rear edge of the base and the ejection port. With the 1/4" extension it brings the mount perfectly flush to the front of the ejection port and gives you just a little more flexibility getting eye relief, and to my mind, looks a little neater. They also make a 1/2" extended that DOES overhang the ejection port by 1/4". Talley's website (catalog) can be a litle misleading. It doesn't always list items particularly for the pre-64s, but if your rifle has the standard .860 hole spacing, as most do, then the ring/mount combo's made for the most current Mod. 70s will work on it.

I'm with Handwerk on this. I don't use the extended bases. I have tried a set once because I was led to believe they were the standard 930702 (matte finish lows). I bought them here (used without the package). Talley's work fine on pre 64's, but lately I've been gravitating towards the Leupold DD's. Here are some pics to give you an idea of one vs. the other: Leupold dual dovetail mounts/rings: Winchester model 70 with Talley lightweight lows (930702) and Leupold VX3 3.5-10X40:
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
