I had a little Thanksgiving luck today and shot this nice NH 8pt at about 9:30am. He weighed in at 178# and has an inside spread a hair over 16". Shot him with my Traditions Vortek .50 cal muzzleloader in some woods near my house.

He isn't the heaviest deer I've shot but has the best looking rack. I'll get busy cutting him up for the freezer over the weekend.

Now, 2 archery tags to try to fill..

Akbob, made it out of the woods, to the check in station (only open one 30 minutes from the house), got him hung up in the shed and back to help with dinner before 1:30! It was a busy day!

This is the third time I've seen this deer. Once last season I bumped him out of his bed and then we saw him cross the road at dusk while in the car back in August. So, I suppose "third times a charm" as they say. This time, he was cruising for does. I first caught movement about 100 yards out through the trees and he was generally angling toward me. I had the wind in my favor and was able to make a couple quick, short moves to get some better openings to shoot through. He got to the opening I wanted and I stopped him for the shot. He never moved after he was on the ground.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Bob! You know these guys aren't a dime a dozen down here. It's kind of funny to spend nine days hunting up north and then come home and shoot the kind of deer down here I spent all that time looking for up there. I'm pleased though. Time to call Leon the taxidermnist... grin
