I have just purchased a 454 casull in a ruger

I am looking at the reloading manuals and am getting confused

There is a large range in loads using powder 296 in a 250 gr bullet

from the 28 to over 36 anyone have any thoughts?

Not all 250 grain bullets are created equal. A very stout jacket is needed to stand up the the .454's maximum pressure, stouter than many bullets have. If the bullet jackets aren't stout enough to handle the strain as the bullet hits the forcing cone they'll deform or fail with all kinds of bad side effects.

Since you're reading manuals, get ahold of the newest Speer manual if you don't have it. Their explanation of the reasoning behind choosing their 300 grain unicore JSP vs their 300 grain high pressure JHP applies to selection of 250 grain bullets as well.

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. 300 gr Hornady XTP Mags, with 29 gr of H110 and a length of 1.760 is just the ticket for me. It is important to trim the cases to a consistent length because it is important to get a real good crimp on the cannelure.
