I own and have owned some expensive 10" to 12" knives. In all honesty I find a good machete more useful in the climate where I live and if I lived in a colder area,I imagine a good hatchet would be even better. I live and hunt in what you would consider a colder climate as it gets kind of chilly in Alberta. I have found Tim's Camp-knife very useful but I also use a Gransfors Bruk hatchet too. I tend to use them equally depending on the task. Not much call for a machete on the prairie where I live and play.

The steel is hardened L6 so I would think a definite step-up from 1075 or the like. Mine has a hamon to it. First I have seen on a production machete. Picked it up from Baronyx Knife store.....he is on BF. For the price it is hard to beat IMO. Mink I've been reading up on them since you posted this. It seems the originals were L6 and the ones now are 15N20 which is very close to L6. Do you have any idea if the new versions are just as good? Reading up on these makes me want to get some 15N20 and start some experimentation. I've also got a 36" old saw blade that was pre carbide tipped blades. It's about 1/8" thick and should be L6. I'm getting in a chopper making mood.

Here's a design I came up with a few years ago. I like it a lot but it's a little heavy from 1/4" 5160 even though it tapers to about 1/8 at the end. I always wanted to do some with thin 5160 but couldn't come up with any. Nice looking parang. Make that out of a leafspring? No, it was stock 5160. I buy it in 5 foot bars. Leaf springs will work but it's only $20 for a 5 foot bar so not worth the effort unless you have an old spring handy that you know for sure is 5160. Most of the older stuff was but you can't be sure on new material. It could be any kind of alloy.
