Reading Winchesterpoor's cloverleaf stock wants has caused me to have to ask a couple questions.

My pre-64 300 H&H has a red Winchester pad, was that stock cut and a pad added?

Did 300 H&H's come from the factory with a pad?

Thanks Men.

Gunner

Not factory unless it was a special order, pads weren't standard on the 300 H&H. One would never know it by the number of 300 H&H's that now wear a pad, seems like there's more with than without....

Thanks Jack, I want to think my 300 is all original, if I've found it has been bubba'd, I may sell it and search out a none tampered with example.

In my experience .300 H&H M/70's with pads predominate over those without even though they originally came from the factory with steel buttplates. I guess Winchester thought that shooters of the day were tough enough to handle the .300 H&H's recoil and that a recoil pad was not necessary. Most I've seen have had vented Pachmyer recoil pads rather than the solid red Winchester pad. One of my best M/70 purchases was a .300 H&H from a dealer at a small gun show in Illinois. He was tired of carrying it around as Illinois was shotgun country and there was no interest in a rifle as powerful as the .300 H&H. This worked to my advantage as he sold it to me for $400.00 it was a toss-up as to who was happier. It was hard to hide a smile as I departed his table with my prize.

Gunner,I still have a pic of the SG (I think it is the SG) can I post the pic here for you?

The pic also has a .270 that you own.

Thanks Gunswizard, and congrats on a fine purchase.

Heck Ya Elk, throw em up, even though I can't remember which pics I sent ya, I still hunt that little 270 in that stick of English, it's the rifle that's factory stock was ran over by a pickup.

Oh, and I didn't run over it either grin

Thanks Elk, yes, that's my old 300 H&H when it wore a steel tube Weaver 4-12x40 AO, that's my M-70 22 Hornet on the right.

Chances are the pad was added after the fact. You can tell if it's a reproduction pad by the spacing of the date. to be honest I don't recall exactly how an original pad would look but this has been discussed here before.

The 300 H&H is a great cartridge. I like mine a lot esp with 165gr NBT. The deer, there not so happy with it.

Most likely correct GSP, the old pad is hard but in very good shape, probably an add on.frown

I do love the rifle though, mine fires 200 gr SAF's and Partitions, and in the last couple years 220 Partitions through an old Lyman receiver peep, deer just don't like pre-64's period do they?grin

I really wouldn't let the pad bother me. I bought a std 270 (why I have no idea) that the stock was cobbled beyond belief. The seller had another original but cut M70 stock that was part of the deal. I added the repo Winchester pad fitted the stock and it looks just fine. Someday I might just go shoot it. To many rifles and not enough deer season frown

Two of my pre'64 M/70's have solid red Winchester pads, I find them very practical when leaning a rifle against a tree/fence barn etc. while hunting. Not as slippery as the steel buttplate and the rifle is less likely to fall over.

I'm with the others, the red pad just fits and that's a beautiful rifle Gunner.

I love those P64 300's.

How about replacing the hard pad with a LimbSaver? Keep the old pad, if you think it still has value.

Or better yet, get the same look with a red pachmayr decelerator, but get better recoil reduction than the hard one. However, the hard one probably doesn't bother gunner.... laugh

If I were to replace the existing pad I would use a repo Winchester pad from Galazan. It just kinda keeps it all Winchester and flows with the rest of the gun. Just my opinion.

GSP,

Yes, not enough time, gonna try not to let this pad bother me too bad now that it may not be original to the gun, depends if it starts to grate on me, I did manage to slip out and sneak up on a button buck in the fog and bust him a 55 yards with the old M-71 in 348 I got from BSA, BOOM flop, the old 250 gr Barnes wrecked his world. smile

Not as slippery and may be a bit more practical yes, but un-fooled with factory 'cool' trumps comfort to me. crazy smile

Very nice pads there Bob, had our old buddy Karnis put a red Silvers pad on the walnut stock for my Heym Mauser in 9.3-62mm, hell, you can barely feel those 320 Woodleighs when they leave at 2400!laugh

gunner if I were to change out a pad, the Winchester replica is how I'd roll. Those are some nice pads. I think Galazan sells those under Winchester license.

Silvers are nice as well!

The pad is not original. Just look at .30 cal pre-WWII British Mauser actioned rifles almost none had recoil pads. It is not needed on small bore of reasonable velocity like .300H&H.
