I bought my own motorcycle when I was 14.... by the time I was 15 it was all about chasing tail and the ultimate buzz and guns took a back seat for a while there.

I'm still puzzled over the tunnel vision thing. Haven't so much as seen a S&B in the flesh, but I have owned or played with many different Leup's, and a critique I'd give of THEM is "tunnel vision" at higher magnifications. So the original reason for hatin' on the 3-9x40 Conquest is confuzzling to me because it does BETTER to my eyes in that regard.

My son was irritating, I'm guessing I was a cocky irritating kid at 14 too.

It sounds from your description that your son is a sharp, hard working kid with drive and that you are allowing him to do things that will keep him grounded. I'll stand by my comment on the whining about a Zeiss - just because he is an exceptional kid doesn't make the mouthy 14 year old part any more attractive no matter how normal it is.

The fact is. that his experience as a long range competitor, winning dozens of trophies, having fired over 8,000 rounds in competition by age 14 awarded him the right, based on experience with Leupold, March, Premier, Nightforce, S&B, as per the chronology above, What is your experience, vs that, to "stand by your comment?" If you are Davis Tubb, I'll listen...other than that, the kid will kick your azz on the trigger, left, right and center, to 1000 and beyond...

In other words, I'm saying his experience to whine about a Zeiss, even at 14, exceeds that of any I know of on this thread, being familiar with most of today's long range competitors...

Holy chit, you are an idiot. No wonder the kid is the way he is...

If tunnel vision is like looking through a thick wall tube, my Nightforce 12-42X56 is guilty. It has some thing like 3/16". My Bushnell 6500 4 1/2-30X50 is on the order of 1/8" and the Leupold and Swarovski seem like the view goes right to the edge. No more than a 1/16". But none of them are in the same league as the Nightforce for resolving detail on the same magnification or low light performance.

I don't *think* that's what the OP meant, but then again I also don't think his original post had much to do with the Conquest, either. smile

Tunnel vision is failure to gain FOV while decreasing magnification.

Interesting. ER shortens on a Conquest at low X's. I suspect that's what he meant. Haven't really assessed what happens with FOV.

This made me laugh. Thank you for being honest, it's refreshing.

I own four conquests, 3-9,(2)3.5-10, and a 4.5-14. Bought the last one used at LGS. Have them on 7 mag, 30-06, 257 WBY, and 220 swift.
So far they have worked just fine.

You had a point, still...

That kid of "Journeyman" has his work cut out for him, if he tries to up the ante on his father, being "uppidy".

While I in no way understand, why this should be the case, one buys Zeiss for the view, not for the works.
