I know I have said earlier that I wasn't a fan of Remington's , however I kind of like that model. The fact that they are 699 at Cabellas and they are in stock helps also. Everything else I was looking at is out of stock.

I was going to trade a Marlin 44 mag off for a LRR in the old 30-06, 26 inch barrel...... It seems they are about the best to deal with.

The 06 does have a lot of benifets, like avalibilty and a slight edge in velocity over the 308 but that's about it.

What say the Fire?

I never could see the benefit of a .308, an 06 has been outclassing it ever since it hit the market..

I have a place for the 06 in my heart.

After using the 308 win, I really like the round for efficiency and accuracy!

The 06 shines in it's ability to handle heavier weight bullets, but few use them.

Either one will serve it's purpose for target/hunting.

Don't trade the Marlin 44. You'll probably regret it latter...and what they offer you in trade will really insult you.

If this is going to be a long range "hunter"...I'd pass on the 08 and 06.

If you do not handload, get the 08.

The 700 30-06 will give you a 1/10 twist, and plenty of magazine latitude for loading the heavies out toward the lands.

You will be able to load bullets in the class of the 208 Amax or 215 Berger to and easy 2750-2800 fps.

Well I traded the Marlin off and got the 700. They even had them on sale today. 599, I had them put a BlackHawk rail for a mount and Blackhawk high rings. The only scope I had to put on was a B/L 3200 3x9 x 50mm firefly. Eventually I will get a more fitting scope.

As for the Marlin, I loved it but it was PIA to shoot. It wasn't bad at 50, but beyond that it patterned.

I think you got a great gun at a great price. Will be interesting to see how much speed you get from that 26" barrel.

Love some 308, but SA 700's usually are chambered to prevent being able to reach the lands at mag length, if that matters to you. Not the case with LA's I've seen. No flies on an 06. 100fps faster with 150's is nothing to sneer at.

There was this fella by the name of Hathcock. He did a lot of good work with the 30-06 in SE Asia. I have handled one of those rifles, and if I had seen one at the 599 mark, I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to walk away from it.

Another recommendation for the 10X Super Chicken.

My 30-06 started out at 26", and eventually shortened to 22".

Here are some velocities I was getting at 26" using Norma brass (roomy), moly tumbled bullets, CCI 200 primers, and RL-22 powder.

These loads were MAX LOADS in my rifle. Start 4-5 gr lower and work up with normal cautions.

240gr Sierra Matchking - 2610 fps (55gr RL22)
210gr Berger VLD - 2800 fps (60gr RL22)
208gr AMax - 2800 fps (60gr RL22)
190gr Sierra Matchking - 2920 fps (62gr RL22)

I like the looks of that 10x mil/quad.

So I know next to nothing about the target knob scopes and the mil quad scopes.

I assume they function silmilar to a peep sight i.e. Where you can zero it for 100 yards and lock it down. Then with practice and chosen load shoot to let's say 500 yards then make a note of how many clicks from 100, 200,300,400,500 and so on.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

In a nutshell, you will zero rifle at 100 yards, then reset your turret knobs to zero. Then you dial up the mils or moa needed for whatever range you are shooting.

You will want to use a ballistic calculator to calculate your drop at distances. I usually print one out at 20 yard intervals.

If you are using a handheld device (iphone etc), you can use one of many apps on it to do the calcs.

Essential gear is a laser rangefinder, unless you are confined to known-distance ranges.

Here's a free online calculator that is fairly user-friendly. Play with it a bit and it's fairly intuitive.

Here's a typical drop chart I printed out. In this case I went with 100 yard intervals, and use a calculator to refine data to the nearest yard in the field. A little slower, but it works too.

Was the $599 sale advertised, because the website doesn't show it currently? I've been watching for these to go on sale for months, now that they have them in stock. I'd like to get a 7Mag to play with.

No it was not. You know how it is with Cabellas, pick a number and wait. Before I went I checked their inventory and they had the 06's in stock. When I got called, and I saw the price, I smiled

On another note, I asked the salesman if they had any CTRs or FCP-SRs stashed, they said no. They said company's don't send them anything the last two weeks of the year and the first week of the new year. Bummer.

But I really like this Remington.

Thanks. I have enough points right now to pay for one but I'm completely out of room in my safes and reallllly would like to see that $599 price. I think that the 7mag Long Range and a $40 reamer rental would be a cheap, nifty way to play with the new 28 Nosler. I'm seeing the M700 LR stocks going for over $200-250 on ebay so you could probably buy a couple, part them out and pay for one that shoots the best.

I am surprised at the 190 gr. Sierra load. That is smokin. 62 grains must fill the case to the rim.

It's a full case before settling it.

Here's a pic with 63 gr RL-22 in both cases. Before and after settling the powder.

Back in the day I had a 30-338 with a cut rifled, 26 inch barrel. All I shot were Hornandy 190 BTSPs. The powder I used then was AA 3100 @70 grains. The velocity was 2974.

And your getting 2920 fps. Wow what a difference modern powders make.

Would Hunter powder from Ramshot be a good powder with 180s-208s. I also have 4831.

I haven't used Hunter or 4831 in the 30-06, but they should both work pretty well for the 180+ bullets.

I ran some Hunter with some 180 Ballistic tips in an older Ruger #1 with a 26" barrel and got around 2950 Fps with good accuracy. Don't have my notes right now but I'm pretty sure I was using Fed. 215 primers. FWIW

A question, What picatinny base and rings would be good for the Rem. And the 10x swfa ?

If you want absolute durability and repeatability at a great price, then SWFA is what you want. 6x or 10x for $300.

No connection to the seller, but just saw this ad today for a Long Range Hunter in .30-06 at $500:

I used it yesterday on a hog. Band flop at 175 yards.

The trigger SUCKS. I can't get over how Remington triggers suck now, they used to be decent. I guess I will need to put a Timney in.

I just took the action out of stock and adjusted the trigger. I took the screw out of the trigger shoe, the backed out the bottom screw until flush. I had to dig out the glue with a dental pick. I don't have a trigger gauge but I could tell by feel that I lightened it up.

Plenty of good choices for rails and rings. I went economy on this Remington and used TPS 20 MOA Steel Base with Super Low Rings. Bolt handle clears fine. Don't really need the canted base with the super chicken unless you are reaching out very far, but if I decide to re-scope later on, I have my bases covered.

The TPS super low rings compare to other's low ring at 0.820"

Sorry, I didn't see your question and my*%}}{>>€£<~~ iPad gives me fits of rage, it keeps shutting down.

But anyway, I don't really know how it groups yet. I just got the trigger bottomed out around 3.5-4 ponds. They have to be the worst trigger Remington ever put out.

Next step, is purchasing a Swfa 10x or a VX3. All I got on it know is 3200 BL Fire fly 3x9/50. Great scope but I want something better suited for long range.

And then I need to decide what bullets. I want to try 165-168s or 178's. I plan on using Sierras or Amaxs, although the new Hornandy looks really interesting.

I need to recoup after the hog hunt, that hit my play money kind of hard.

As much as I like the concept of this setup, I'm still on the fence about mine. The trigger absolutely sucks, but that's easily replaced. The other problem I'm having is how heavily the barrel fouls for me. Maybe I'm just too biased to having a quality lapped barrel, but my groups go to crap after about 15 rounds with mine.

I would like to do a build similar to this or a Sendero style, in the 30.06.
