Does anyone remember this article? Or was it on the "Guns of Ben Lily"?

I think he may have done a "Guns of the Arizona Rangers" as well.

I remember someone mentioning the 35 Win in association with Ben Lily which was a new one on me. (30-30 and 33 Win. I associate with Ben Lily).

I don't think it was Venturino, because he is not ( as I recall) a '95 fan.

I must have read the article in a Rifle or Handloader, unless it was in one of the special editions.

I remembered that article, forgot his grandfather had been a ranger.

I believe the reason for specifying 45LC and 30-40 was the availability of ammunition from the military.

I might have to dig out my copy of "legacy of leverguns".

Syc, I think we discussed this one night by PM.

Seems .30 WCF and .33 WCF were the only two ( per J. Frank Dobie) I had heard of associated with Lilly as well.

I remember seeing photos of an 1895 in .35 WCF that belonged to author Frank Bird Linderman that Kid Russell did some pretty fancy scratching on the receiver with his pocket knife, one night around an Arizona campfire!!!

Actually the rifle was engraved by Charlie Russell, the famous Montana cowboy artist in 1913. The rifle actually belonged to former territorial Gov. Hauser who had loaned it to Linderman indefinitely. Linderman wrote about it in a book about Charlie Russell.

"Kid" was Charlie's old handle from his cow punching days!

I would have loved to have been at that campfire and watched him do that!

You're right. My (limited) Lily knowledge comes from Dobie, it seems like there ought to be more sources out there.

I was thinking either Venturino or Pearce might have brought it up, but it could have been Scovil(l) ?

Oh well, if any one finds something about this, it would be great to hear about.

There was an 1895 that Russell had engraved in a similar fashion on display at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum here in OKC the last time I was there. I presume the same one?

I remember an article on the 35 Win. I can't remember the author though. I think it was an article in the Rifle magazine.

Because of the great variation in the amount of use these old rifles have been subjected to, powder charges, pressures and velocities will vary from rifle to rifle. Btw, had my 35 WCF out this weekend at the south Texas place!

Only morning I saw a nilgai I was quail hunting. Big bastid too!!!! . And there I stood all alone with 7 1/2 shot!!!
