A friend just gave me 4 spools of this line. Dark grey color 10lb braid that is no longer manufactured. Anybody have experience using this stuff with spinning tackle? I'm still in the dark ages using Stren mono!

Braid works ok on spinning tackle it it's not to heavy.

It's going to require a lot more attention to knots, and doesn't play well in super cold....but that aside it is superior.

Braid is like any other kind of line: there are good kinds and not so good. No telling what the Fenwick brand is but if it's discontinued that might be a hint.

All you can do is spool up a reel or two and try it. I'd suggest a casting reel as well as a spinning reel, because what works on one may not on the other.

I have a number of bait casting reels spool with that line and LIKE it a LOT. Just make sure you use knots that are compatable with it.

What I like about it is the no stretch. Hook ups are electric and you don't need to pull the jaws off the fish to set the hook as there is no stretch.

I finally tried the Fenwick Iron Thread. I've been fishing off a boat dock in south central Florida. Quarry is largemouth and bait is live shiners. There are a couple of weed beds a looong cast from the dock. Get a 6" shiner close and hold on, but hookups with stren were poor-too much stretch and they are gone on the first jump unless they swallowed bait. Went to the iron thread and did find a bit of a learning curve. Spool says 10lb, but it is MUCH stronger. Occasional wrap around rod tip. Really need to watch bail closure, so old Cardinal will have to go. Long casts are easier and hook sets are deep and immediate using a 2 ought hook. Landing % now about 80%. After landing a big bass 24" long I did find line had cut into itself on the spool and needed to be pulled out by hand and rewound. I'm really impressed, since there is no line stretch, there is no room for error when fighting a big fish. Just my take.

Iron Thread was discontinued about 15 - 20 years ago. It's a first generation braid and if you like it you'll love the current manufactured super braids.
