At Sea Level, would the Factory 9 1/8th inch twist be enough to stabilize them?

Or what would be the better bullet?

90gr scenar? or Hornady 105 BTHP?

I've tried the stability calculators but I just don't know enough about that stuff to know what I'm looking at. It tells me the 105's would be marginally stable, but from what I can read it is referring to the stability when it starts to slow around the transonic region.

I won't be shooting it that far, so I was wondering if it would make a diff at less than 600 yards?

I could always drop down to a 95gr something if it didn't work.

thanks.

Bob.

Or has anyone tried the new 95gr Sierra Tipped Matchking?

Or should I move this to the reloading forum?

I have a Remington ADL .243 with a 24" 9.125 twist. I have tried the 105 AMAX in it with several powders (780, H1000) and they stabilized just fine at 1K' altitude. Try it as I think it will work for you.

I live right on the ocean and I have shot the 107gr Bergers out of my factory 243 and they did fine.

Shot the 105 Amax and 100V and worked well. Not so good with Varget. Also tried the Berger 105s with Varget and they did not shoot well. I think the 105s with that twist are going to be powder picky or up to the individual rifle.

I can attest, that the 105 BTHP shoots well out of a one in 10 twist Model 70, early to mid 80s vintage....

used with RL 15, IMr 4064 and IMR 4895....and H 414...

Thanks for the replies,

Seafire, have you used the BTHP on deer?

not connected with one while carrying it...

was using it for long range targets, but I tried it since Stumpy aka Big Schtick, claims to have slayed thousands of animals with it and about any other cartridge...

so my answer was directed that it will stabilize and shoots well out of my 1 in 10 twist Model 70....

I'll defer its effect on game to some others that have actually connected......

I don't however see where it would NOT be a decent deer bullet....

It works, start with 40gr RL-17. I found my load at 41gr with a 105.

How fast does that load go? Getting ready to do load development using the 105 bthp and RL 17.

I had to use a mag primer to get velocity with RL 17 and RS Hunter in my 22" Ruger Hawkeye at max book loads, 105 A Max.

I guess I was worried for nothing over the factory barrel twist,

Two back to back 3 shot groups from a factory Remington Varmint .243 win. at 100 yards. Tried this for a starting load. I dropped the action into an HS Precision stock I already had and adjusted the trigger as low as I could get and everything still function properly.(safety works, gun doesn't fire on it's own, etc.)

Seems its already been resolved/confirmed, but the 105 Amax works fine in Remmy factory barrels. I was tossing some of them out of my .243 Remmy sendero/varmint to about 700 yards, and pinging an 6" steel plate with relative ease.

Pic of rifle used:

The house you see in the background is the hunting "lodge" about 700 yards or so away (can't recall for sure) ...

Three shots on the plate from that distance ...

Same rifle does equally well with 85g TSX's. Antelope taken at just over 400yds ...

Great shooting WGM, Mine looks similar to yours except I dropped the barreled action into the stock off my 5R .308, topped with a Leupold Mark AR with the T2 turret.

We have steel at 300, 400 and 487 yards at the camp where I hunt. 2 MOA round plates.

I am using Hornady factory 100gr SPBT's for hunting and put in 5 minutes of up from a 200 yard zero and can hit the 400 yard plate easily with those.

I haven't killed anything but paper with it yet, but I've watched my son kill 12 or so deer with his .243 using 95 fusions and federal powershoks.

Bob.
