Not sure where to post this:

Do the hinds make the same herd talk mews as elk?

Do elk cow calls work for red deer?

Thanks

Red hinds are not as vocal as cow elk. They bark which is unique to the ears of a seasoned elk hunter. They make a few other sounds too but do not think an elk call would get much positive attention, Maybe if you are hunting NZ hybrids... YMMV - I might be worth a try once.

They dont vocalise to each nearly as much as elk cows, although I have often wondered about buying a cow elk caller thing from the states and trying it.

Both hinds and stags will bark as a warning - which usually means, I don't know what you are - identify yourself. This most often occurs at close range in thick bush. I have also heard them calling for lost fawns.
I thought if I have a cow elk caller the time to use it is when you get barked at in thick bush.
I have tried bleating like a goat, and that sort of works, They don't come in, but they will tend to circle round you trying to cross your wind.

I will try it one day yet. It also may be of use use during the roar to use on a stag who is not 'coming in' to roaring.

Yes, you have reminded me of my musings on this subject. I will try it. Who sells elk cow caller things over the interweb? Cabelas or somewhere?

I know a couple of experienced stalkers who have talked about having limited success with an elk cow call on reds..

From what I recall of the conversation, it works best in woodlands rather than on the open hill and also there was no really consensus as to whether the hind was responding to the calf bleat, or whether it was just curiosity..

A "Hind in Heat" scent would be an interesting thing to try during the Rut...
