Just curious as to what your ideal casting temps are with the different pots and furnaces discussed in the other thread.

Ran a big batch of Lyman #457643 FN for my '86 Win today. The ideal casting temp for my 30:1 alloy from this big pot is a constant 700 degrees no matter which big 45 cal iron mold I use.

your pics don't work for me.

I use straight clip-on wheelweights, no tin, and shoot for about 750.

Any mold of mine that is too fussy to cast well between 700-800 gets tinkered with until it works, or sold. Within that range though, I don't worry about it too much.

Sorry about the pics Photo Bucket must have been in maintenance mode when I uploaded them yesterday.

I can't run temps much higher than 700 with these large 45 cal molds since they're single cavity and hold tremendous heat or they start to frost then cast on the light side.

In the past, I've cast the big heavies with 30:1 at closer to 800 degrees, but the last batch I did at 700 and they turned out great. That is ladle pouring with a 20 lb cast iron pot on a propane burner. If I'm bottom pouring pistol bullets with WW alloy, 720-730 seems to work best for me.
