Been looking to buy a replacement for my '09 Ram 1500 for something with more guts and tow capacity for my travel trailer, preferably diesel and 250-2500 class truck.

Toured the local Ford dealer, looking at F-250 diesels, and started drilling down into specs. Guess what- the only fuel tank available in the 250 line is 26 gallons! If you want more tank capacity, you need to go to the 3500's. Are you kidding me? When I quizzed the sales folks about it, they were quick to offer aftermarket tanks to solve the problem. That's just what I want, a tank in the cargo box area to reduce my ability to haul stuff.

Bottom line- I will probably end up with a GMC and Duramax, with its 36 gallon tank. I really like Ford's trucks, but what design genius came up with the 26 gallon tank idea? Really?

37.5 gal is optional with the diesel engine, depending on which wheel base you go with.

If I'm reading it right 37.5 is standard with the 158 and 172" wheelbase. 26 gallons on the shorter versions.

It is easy to have 50 gallon underbody aftermarket tank installed. Did it on my F250 crew cab diesel with a short bed. Any truck shop should be able to do it for you in a matter of a couple of hours and it works well.

I had a 1999 f250 diesel and can't remember the exact tank size but do remember thinking that it was pretty small for a long bed truck. It was the Supercab so maybe it was the 26 gal and nothing has changed since then.

I have a Supercrew half ton with a 5'-6" short bed and they managed to get a 36 gallon tank under it.

I had a 1/2 ton chevy with a 24 or 26 (can't remember) gallon tank. Fine around town, but I was hunting gas as soon as I filled up when towing at 10 mpg. I have the diesel chevy with the big tank and the diesel lasts longer than the bladder when towing. Much, much better.

I have a 35 on my Dodge 2500 long bed diesel. When traveling, I can get online on gasbuddy.com and locate the best prices. It saves money and a lot of lookng in unfammiliar towns. With the bigger tank, its no big deal to keep going for another town or 2 to find a better price.

Note for traveling in Oregon: Some of the posted diesel prices are quite low, particularly at truck stops. They have a deal for truckers where they don't pay state tax at the pump. They're taxed by the mile so they pay by mail periodically. The posted prices often don't include the tax so you have to add that to the price you see.

250/350 doesn't matter. 6.75 or 8' box does. 8' box = 36-37gal tank, short box = 26. Titan offers a 50 that fits under the short box.

The way I read the specs the standard cab and extended cab diesel are 26. Anything with the Supercrew cab is 37.5 regardless of bed length. Gas engines are 35 gal with all configurations.

It looks like that on specs page, but, go and look at what config is actually 158 and 172, they're the long-box ext cab and crew cab. Crew Cab short box is 156" wheel base and 26 gal tank. I have a Crew Short Box F-250 w/6.7L and it's got a 26gal fuel tank.

thanks,

I was only interested in the shorter configurations, to be able to fit one in my garage!

Ended up buying a 2016 Sierra SLT 2500 HD diesel, with a 36 gal. tank. Took it for a 250 mi. break-in run yesterday, avg. mileage was 23. That was with lots of slow down and speed ups, stops to explain to the wife all about the electronics, stop for lunch, let the dog out, etc. This truck kicks butt, and can't wait to tow my trailer with it. Haven't put my foot in it yet, but the temptation is strong.....

When we were looking at new trucks for the wife all the f150 except one had 23 gallon tanks. We ended getting the one with the 36 gallon tank. I asked why they y had so many trucks with 23 gal tanks. They said ford was having a problem with their supplier of 36 gallon fuel tanks but had a [bleep] of 23 gal tanks and were using them as they told us ford had to build trucks.
