Dave,
I've been thinking the ideal NULA would be a .378 Weatherby.
Just enough barrel to keep the explosion going forward.
It would be the ideal rifle for the gun shop/range expert/commando... An
expensive tool, however, priceless when produced on the
range and observed in action... I've had this stick in mind since
my first NULA...(grin)

Regards, Matt.

I've handled a NULA chambered in 300 Weatherby. It balanced and pointed quite well. Thankfully I didn't have to shoot it.

Better you than me.
Watched a guy at the range one time with a 338 WM on a Brown precision super light.
Under 6 pounds.
Shot 5 inch groups at 100 yards all day long.

I know a smith who put together a lightweight 460 Weatherby for a customer who could not be dissuaded. IIRC the customer fired it exactly once and the results were a busted finger knuckle and a bloody (broken?) nose from a thumb impact.

Dave,

The first ULA (this was before Ultra Light Arms became the New ULA) I ever handloaded for a hunted with was a .300 Winchester Magnum, a standard Model 28 with 24" barrel. It didn't weigh six pounds all up, and in fact I had to mount a pretty light scope to get it down to 7 empty.

I was younger and tougher then (the late 1980's) and didn't mind the recoil all that much, in fact while fooling with handloads once shot a 9-shot group of right around an in with three different loads, if I recall correctly using the 165 Hornady Interlock, 180 Speer Grand Slam and 200 Nosler Partition. Hunted with it that fall with the 200 Partition load, which got 2900+ fps, and didn't have any difficulty killing stuff.

Went through a few more ULA's after that before finally figuring out I'd been dancing around a .30-06 for almost decade, so ordered one, set up pretty much like the .300. Still have it, and in fact have taken more game with it over the past 20 years than any of my other rifles.

But mostly my point is that some people don't mind the kick of a light .300 magnum--though a .300 RUM wouldn't be my first choice!

Hi John,
The biggest problem with the one I had was it was way to short for me.
That did not help.

As far as I can tell.
That was RDs last post on the fire.
I considered him a friend and I will miss him.
RIP RD.

Yep, the wrong LOP never helps!
