Doing the ballistic gack with 200 grain accubonds... BC of .588 (G1?)... norma calculator shows 12 inches of drift (10mph wind, 90 degrees) at 400 yards if I start it at 2700. For comparison, the Norma 125 grain kalihari out of my 280 would drift almost 20"...dang. and a 140 NP out of a 6.5x55 would drift about 15". Any reason not to use the 200 grain accubond for all game deer and up, lower 48, near and far, out of a 300 SAUM?

Run the same check with the 208 A-Max. Plug in the 168 TTSX at warp as well.

That said, to 400, any difference is negligible.

Run the numbers with Hornady's new ELD bullets. A 212 gr bullet with a BC of .673. Fired at 30-06 speeds it has about the same energy at 200 yards as a 180 gr Partition fired from a 300 WM.

FWIW, my stepson used my .300 Win Mag loaded with 200-grain ABs to shoot an average desert mule deer buck at about 85-90 yards back in November. The deer pretty much died instantly but there was more bloodshot meat around the entry and exit wounds than I like to see. They work great on elk, though...

Nevermind bullet construction. Any bullet in the vitals will work. smirk

ps: the accubond has a decent rep.

I would have zero issues with that bullet in a 300 mag from mouse to moose, whether an easy broadside slat-shot, or something more challenging with big bones, whether an easy first shot, or a follow-up on an animal that offers a less-than-ideal, moving shot. You could do a lot worse; numbers can lie (or mislead).

It is indeed a G1 BC.

I ran a bunch of them in my 300WM and found them to be an accurate bullet in general. The BC is good enough to make them a legit long-ish range bullet. I did not kill anything with them although I did kill two elk with the very similar (one would presume!) 8mm 200-gn Accubond.

You might battle COAL a bit in a short action. Are you limited to ~ 2.8"? The ogive is well forward on them (relative to the tip) so that'll help get you towards the lands, probably, but you'll be intruding into your powder space a bit. Long bullet.

It's the first hunting bullet I'd try in a .30 magnum, for what that's worth. Has a lot going for it.

I shot a big whitetail buck a year and a half ago with the 200 grain Accubond from a .300 Win Mag at about 2850 fps at the muzzle.

Broadside shot, double lung, range about 150 yards. Not severe meat damage, quarter-size exit hole. Buck ran about 75 yards and piled up.

Granted it's not the same caliber, but a 200gr accubond out of my 325wsm at 90 yds flattened out on the skull of a bull moose. Zero penetration. Bullet detonated. Terminal coma for the moose, but I wasn't pleased with the over all results. The 200gr AB in both the 325wsm and my 300rum shoot great, but I'll not hunt anything with them.

Wow. I tested the 8mm 200-grainer pretty good twice and it did great both times. A lengthwise deer and one of the elk. The other elk was broadside. I'd trust the 8mm NAB for any shot based on what I saw.

Goes to show, eh? smile

Since there's a bit of .30 gack happening... trying an interesting one today in my old '06. 168 Tipped Matck King (TMK). The BC is around .530 and I bought them uber-cheap! Running the numbers, they hang with other "stuff" from the '06 well enough to be interesting out to pretty far. And they were CHEAP! smile

I've resurrected the '06 and am gonna do my best to wear out the P-N barrel on it so I can rebarrel it in good faith to something more fun. At the same time want to address the "donut hole" in my shooting skills- that midrange zone where it's too far for offhand but not really a long range prone type shot. Slung tight, sitting, etc.

Anyway. Sorry for the digression.

Just shot a really big cow elk with 200 gr. Accubonds from my .300 Wea.. Hit the shoulder twice.. Found them perfectly expanded in the off side.. They weighted 93 gr. and 123 gr.

I use a G7 BC of 0.268 for this bullet, lines up quite nicely on the ballistic calculator with a start speed of 2700fps out of an '06.
Very good moose bullet as well.

Same here. I have been pretty impressed with the 200 AB out of the 300 RUM and 300 Wby on elk..

This was from this past fall's elk a buddy took at around 200 yards from a 300 Wby

So yeah, what the others said, for a 300 magnum, the 200 AB would be one of the first bullets I'd try..

Thanks
