Nice. Dad had one done. Real recovery is longer than a hip they say. His was.

Dont sit around... do the therapy and get that sucker going.

You'll be glad you did.

Meds/rehab/ice is your new mantra, kidding aside I had both hips done the same day seven years ago now. If I had known how well it would have gone I'd have done it a year earlier. Follow the instructions your doctor and PT give you to the letter, do no more/no less of the prescribed exercises and you will be surprised how quickly you'll recover. The doctor will tell you that you will be as good as you're going to be at one year, in my case I continued to improve well into the second year. I hope that your knee recovers as well as my hips did. Good luck. BTW they really stapled your knee well, you've got what looks like 2x the number of staples as I had in my hips.

Whoa......as others have said, get active as quick as you can, PT is they key. I'm waiting until I'm at least 60 to get both of mine done....you must be lot's older than me.

Good luck, I bet you'll be glad you did it.

62 next Monday. I had no plans for a knee due to age, I just couldn't hobble around any more and had to do something. I had to wear a paper bag over my head, just to go up or down stairs so people wouldn't recognize me stumbling around like a geriatric leftover...

Doc says I'll need a new one when I get old enough. I'm only 47 now and get injections every 3 months. I'm hoping tech will just get better and less invasive. Wouldn't it be cool if you could get an injection of nano bots to go in and rebuild everything?

Trying to get your health insurance deductible taken care of early in the year?

PT may be painful, but if you don't push to get a full, or nearly full, range of motion, you may end up with equally, maybe more, painful muscle adhesions. That is what happened to my BF after his knee replacement. He has a low threshold of pain and didn't push himself during rehab, so he ended up having to have the adhesions "released" under general anesthesia and probably added at least six months to his recovery.

I've heard that knee replacement is a pain, but be damn if I wouldn't like to have a pair of bionic knees.

My knees are fugged up enough to make it a pain to get around, but not rotten enough to need replacement.

Would be more inclined to believe his timing involves being 100% come elk season 2016.

Good luck on your recovery. I had a knee replacement at 58 in June of 2014. Be diligent with the PT. It sucks, but it'll be worth it. I missed hunting in '14, but had no problems this year hiking around.

My Mother had that done at 75 years young. She took one pain pill and was back on her feet doing rehab within a week or so.

The rehab folks actually came to the house, which was great!

Congrats!!

I had both of mine replaced together a bit over thirteen years ago at are 58. I had to talk hard with my surgeon to do both at the same time but he finally agreed providing I didn't complain about it later.

It went well for me as I had a secret weapon, the better half who was a retired Registered Nurse. She could be a relentless slave driver at times, who kept me doing my PT, whether I felt like it or not. She actually deserves most of the credit for such a quick and successful recovery. I have full range of motion in both legs and I was back to work in eight weeks.

As others have said the biggest secret is in your willingness to be diligent with your therapy. I would do the same thing in a heartbeat if faced with the problem again. The results are well worth the two months spent recovering from the surgery.

A good friend had both knees done at the same time. Two days later he told his nurse he didn't need pain meds as his knees hurt less then than any time in the last twenty years.

Hope you have a quick recovery.

P.S. because of a car accident I have had both replaced over the years. It sure beats the alternative. Cheers NC

Congratulations on the rebuild and upgrades!
The therapy, pain and annoyances are temporary.
Getting it handled after you shot up the winter bunny population was smart, now you have some nice weather coming in a few months and you'll be ready to carry out Travis's Elk this fall!
Nice Meds too! smile

I'd ask for all the staples, once they're removed,...use em to decorate something, or make a hatband.

Got my knee in March of 13. Took a while to get going again but actually looked forward to therapy. The stretching and excercise made it more flexible. Now the knee is great but other problems are popping up so I'm still screwed. Old age sucks even at 61. Get well soon.

The nurse just pulled another taped I V out of my thigh where they had some medi-pac pain killer tube. I almost hit her when she pulled all the hair out. The tube was nothing, but the hair hurt...

My Dad had one done 25 years ago at age 60 back when they weren't so simple. With a lot of therapy he was better than ever. About 15 years later he had the same one replaced. Much less traumatic, much less therapy. Came out all good. Safe healing.

Get better quick Shrapnel.

A 71 yo friend came back to work a few weeks ago after a new knee. According to him, the first (and the best) thing you will notice. Each day the pain will be a bit less, rather than each day worse than the day before.

By fall, you will be giving the grouse hell.

Wow, quality staple job. Better cool it on wearing nylons for a while. You'll shred em. And next time go for the full body wax. It's cheaper and much less painful. smile

Hope you're up and at em soon!

I had a spinal for ACL surgery about 15 years ago. They took a tendon out of one knee to put it in the other, and held it up for me to see. It looked like the gristle you'd trim off a tough cut of beef.

Guy in the bed next to me had a hip replaced. They had him up and walking within a day. He got real excited when the doc told him he could have sex, said "wait till I tell my wife."

This is the morning of the 4th day and it looks like I will get to go home. Thank goodness for visitors to relieve the boredom of the hospital room.

Dober came by a few times to bring various reading materials, this one from Eileen and John...

I had MINOR surgery (arthroscopic) Dec 3rd to the rt knee & rt. shoulder at the same time. It's now Feb. 5th. The shoulder is doing nicely but still healing. The knee is another matter. What I had done was nothing compared to a replacement. Yet, the healing for minor knee repair seems to take FOREVER. It's usable & I get around but it may be a couple more months till it feels right.

I'm no stranger to hospitals. All the "hard charging " Big Stick accuses me of, has taken it's toll. This injury didn't require surgery, but therapy and ice were a big help. After several joint surgeries and 2 rotator cuff surgeries, I have quite a few of the necessary aids for recovery hanging around the house...

Looks like you've been a busy man.
Wishing you the best with your surgeries. I see my Doc on the 15th, my right knee may be next. Not looking forward to it, yet, feeling better would be nice.

You take care. Stay up with your PT.

There may be advantages for Couch Sitters, as Schitck likes to call some of us...

Shrap, hope you heal up real quick there my friend...

and are back in action, pain free in the near future...

I thank the good Lord, my skeletal system is in very good working order for my age... but then I've gone out of my way to make it so.... learning a lot about proper body mechanics being a corpsman in the Army...

saw a lot of young guy and a lot of medical personnel with skeletal and joint problems from bad mechanics...

Shrap, you are going to be down a while and it is cold outside. If you need any reading material to help pass the time let me know and a box will be on the way. Working the therapy and not rushing too much is the key to a good result. You are young enough to reap the rewards of repair. Good luck.

Shrapnel, I've always enjoyed your posts - experience, wisdom, and insight ( plus, some beautiful shotguns as well). Please know you are in my prayers during this recovery time.

Please ask them what make/model of shears they used for the trim-up.

I am looking for something for taxidermy work on Russian hogs....
