Well, Rick at Extreme Rifleworks did it! I wanted to replace my RAR stocks with a better handle, and didnt want to go with wood, or laminate. With the RAR bedding system, this creates a bit of a problem. So we figured that if you can bed the Ruger "V-wedge pillars" into a quality stock, the problem will be solved.

I gave him two of my RAR's and he cut the section with the pillars and mag box out, to include the triggerguard also. He then thinned the cut section out, and widened the MPI and B&C stocks to let the section of Ruger stock drop in. It took alot of fitting, but he got it to work. In the following pix, the green/webbed stock is the MPI, and the Tan/gray/webbed is the B&C.

The thought here was to greatly improve the stock on the factory RAR, which he did superbly! Sure, it was made to be an inexpensive rifle. But, the thought here is that if you have a couple RAR's, you can switch the stock to any of them, and have a quality stock on a great shooter. Or, put as many on as you want! Just free float your largest bbl contour and you are good to go.

The green one is my 300 Blackout, and the light colored one is my stainless 223 Compact. Targets were shot last week and yes Im happy with the rifles!

Very interesting! Looks good! I'd be curious in the weight of the MPI stocked rifle if you've weighed it.

I'm interested in this as I have 2 lefthanded sons. This would be a good way to get them a "starter" that gets upgraded when they get older.

Along somewhat similar lines, MDT is about to start making their LSS chassis for the RAR action. It's not a conventional hunting stock of course, but might be an option for somebody looking to build off the cheap RAR action. The RAR aftermarket will speed up in the next few years, most likely.

I was hoping to get over to his shop to weigh them today, but ran out of time this morning. I'll try to get it done tomorrow. Yep, these stocks are an awesome upgrade! Not limited to the "classic" design, either. Thumb holes, varmint, and other styles can be made to fit.

ongshot3 - your 'smith has a boatload of skill & talent. With that in mind did you guys kick around the idea of firming up the fore-end without the time & effort (his labor rate) spent cutting out the "V" pads and then re-fitting/bedding them into another stock? He did a really nice job but, in my estimate, that had to cost a pretty penny X 2. Homeesteader

The stock is the only reason I've held off picking up an RAR. The fugly is out of control...nearly as much as a Tikka. At least the Tikka has options.

I figure it's just a matter of time before someone comes out with an offering.

Getting the section out of the Ruger stock wasn't too bad(concerning time). It was one of those "I wonder if this can be done" conversations, and he did it. I just didn't want to mess with the plastic stock. I'm sure it could be stiffened up a bit, but the loonyism took over!😃. Next one might get dropped into an ambi-thumbhole! Yes, he is very talented! The only thing I did was the paint! Not sure what his price is on these, just yet.

Mine were the first, to see if he could do it. He is working up a price on MPI blanks, and B&C conversions. I'll get some prices posted tomorrow, or you could email Rick directly.

longshot- Thanks for the info and I look foward to more. I hope Rick doesn't get scooped as I could easily see a stock company coming out with an option. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if he can't talk MPI into doing it. It's not like they are shy about having some off the wall options.

I can. I took a $350 ADL and had it rechambered and put a McMillan stock on it. Not much difference between that and this IMO.

That said, if costs are too high, a Boyds laminate could be had for $150.

Weight on the MPI stock was 28 ounces. The B&C was 30 oz.

Rick said that the total cost for an MPI like mine, cut to your LOP, pad, studs, and paint would be $575.00. Kevlar/graphite about $150 more. He will offer a bunch of styles and options, so inquire with specifics.

If you provide a B&C, the conversion labor for a finished stock is $300.

To get this done, you must provide your plastic stock for the conversion.

He also said that he could put one in a McMillan, if you provide the stock.

Reminds me of these kids who spend $1000 on plastic body "ground effects" panels and bolt them to their 1997 Saturn.

I just got my RAR Predator back from Rick with an MPI Classic stock. He also re-crowned and re-threaded it for my suppressor. He did excellent work and I am very happy with it. 7.5 pounds ready to hunt.

Very nicely done! I'm strongly leaning to get my 9yo a 243 RAR and like that there's an upgrade stock option for down the road.
