Thats not to bad. ALwyas figured 500 acres per hunter down there, so you aren't far off and with 5 good hunters shoudl be fine.

Congrats.

Excellent! That area is a bit too far from me, but if I had a chance like that, I'd probably forget that!

I'd put locks on your blinds, might save you a few surprises in the morning.I hunted down there 20yrs ago.It was real common for land owners to invite locals to hunt your lease while your gone.Don't let the owner know when your going to be down, just show up during the week every once in a while to keep them guessing.Game cam by the gate might be good too.Good deer country if it's not over hunted.I went 77 to Riveria,285 to Hebbronville,16 to Zapata when I went down there.Good luck to y'all.

More than strange hunters in your blind. Wets like to sleep off the ground. We've caught more than one in our blinds. Hunted 5 years north of San Ignacio about 20 miles halfway to Aguilares. Spent a couple of years off 16 near Bustamante. Lots of game at both places. One ranch was 10,000 acres the other 3500. Good luck. Hasbeen

Rog,

I ain't telling you something you don't already know but I've been through Zapata prob'ly half a dozen times in as many years. As you know before the Border went down the tubes it was a growing concern as a retirement community, what with the climate and good fishing right there.

Before the jet ski incident where that American got shot I talked to a local (an Anglo retiree) who's upscale house fronted the lake. He complained about the constant boat traffic without lights at night coming in from the Mexican side. Of course nobody wanted to say anything for fear of reprisals. Then after that shooting the DPS was all over that lake for awhile, so I dunno how it is now.

Last time I was there was just over a year ago (I was doing a 200 mile Rio Grande water-sampling project with a student and her family, them being originally from the Border). Got to speak at length with her cousin, a Zapata local, an American Tex-Mex Redneck in his twenties.

Biggest hunting-related problem he said he has had is with theft by illegals on their ranch. Including trying to steal his truck while he was off in a blind.
