I am thinking of having a m70 rebarreled to 9.3x62. I want it light. It will be used for black bear and moose. I am thinking of using a Douglas #3 finished at 20" dropped in a hunters edge. Anyone have a lightweight 9.3x62?

How light are you looking to go? My M12 Mauser is about 7 1/4 pounds. Any specific questions?

What barrel contour is currently on the M70? Might consider having it rebored by JES to 9.3x62. In doing so, you'll maintain the existing barrel profile (if it suits your definition of light).

+1. Saves money, is already blued and fitted to stock. IME, quality rebores shoot as well or better than new barrels.

700 300 H&H rebored to 400 H&H by Norm Johnson, restocked and Rigby style bottom metal. "Big Medicine"

I had a 9.3x62 built on a Colt Light Rifle. It had a Douglas #3 installed by Melvin and stocked with an 18oz MPI rifles inc style stock. The completed rifle was 5lb 9oz bare and 6lb 3oz with Talley QR rings and a 2.5x Leupold.

I used it for a couple seasons and got some game with it but in the end it was just too much of a good thing. Since I already also had a 6 3/4lb 338 Win and a 7 1/4lb 375H&H, the CLR is now a 5lb 6.5-06AI.

In summation, cool concept but just outside the realm of practical in execution.....which roughly translates to GO FOR IT!!

His pics are always that same format. Long rectangle, grainy, weird?

Makes him easy to spot!

Current barrel contour is factory ultimate shadow. Haven't ruled out a rebore. Looking to be ~7-7.25lbs with leupold 4x. How do these recoil compared to 84l 30-06 with 180s?

Shooting my 8lb 8oz M98 20"bbl 9.3x62 using 270gr Speers at 2415fps is about like shooting my 6lb 6oz S&W 1640 17"bbl .30-06 using 180gr Federal ammo at 2509fps.

Gee 260 a'int it funny that the 721, 722 pics and this photo were taken on the same rug. Gotta tell you that it's really tough to look all over the net' to find all these pictures to steal with exactly the same background. Makes ya gotta wonder just who is the liar ????

long ? rectangular ? uhhhh that's the shape of a rifle last time I looked. grainy ? uhhhh that's what you get with an old digital camera and image limitation imposed by the site to allow quick downloading for viewers.

In any case, topic was a 9.3x62 barrel not unproven accusations or photo critiques.

OP, you'll like the 9.3. An uncommon one.

Larry Root,

You're untrustworthy and anything you post is suspect.

A trustworthy person wouldn't have to change his handle all the time. You are always changing handles as a means by which to escape from your well earned reputation.

Have you forgotten that you made:

I'm sure that FOsteology has a list of your other handles somewhere. As they say, "you can run, but you can't hide".

As for me, there is no question at all who the liar is. You're as bad as Safariman, AKA Mark Claireborne, but at least he finally figured it out and left. You, on the other hand, keep coming back with a new handle, but the same old pictures and line of BS.

I have a sub 6lb ruger in 358. It has an MPI stock and a #2 Douglas at 20"

I haven't measured the barrel thickness at the muzzle to see if it would be possible to get to a 9.3 in the #2 but just going by looks, If building it myself I would opt for a #3

My 358 is fairly lively shooting 200 grainers, but not painful. I stout load under a 225 partition is getting into the transition zone. Part of that is the compact size of the stock.

Here is the 358,

and to show how compact the MPI stock is, here it is next to the McMillan MKII classic it replaced.

Some 20 years ago I built a very similar rifle 20" #2 douglas, brown kevlar stock on a tang safety in 358 Norma and it was one of the worst kickers I ever fired. It wasn't really how hard it kicked but more of how fast it came back.

As for me I could go for a 9.3 like you suggest. It ( like my 358) would be a carry a lot, shoot a little rifle. My feeling is that the recoil of the 9.3 would be better than that of the Norma.

I had one built on a commercial Mauser action a few years ago just like that. Number 3 Douglas at 21" .
Worked out great but alas, I am the proverbial gun whore. Something else came along that was all sparkly and caught my eye.
But I did manage to drop a nice buck with one shot before it went away. Nice package.
Good luck with it.

Here's my Rem 700 with a Douglas #3 at 20".

setup just like that with three rounds I was at 8 lbs even. That was after drilling some holes in the butt of that lam JRS stock. That stock did not agree with me and shooting off the bench was absolutely brutal...

I've barely shot the thing and picked up a Ruger No.1 in 9.3 Mouse which I hunted elk with this year. Probably gonna rebarrel the 700 or sell it.

Anyway, I pulled the action and weighed it and with no scope but Talley LW rings mounted she weighs 4 lbs 15 oz. Don't know how much your M70 action weighs but you should be able to figure out some weights from that data.

Good luck. A shorty 9.3 rocks!

My 9.3X62 is on a Pac Nor stainless barrel in Douglas #3 contour. 22 1/2" in length, .635" at the muzzle.

The other parts are a pre-64 transition action and a Brown Precision fibreglass stock. With a Leupold 6X36 scope in DDs, it weighs 7 pounds 6 oz, is slightly muzzle heavy and is perfect! I wouldn't change a thing. It is the tan rifle in the photo.

With 250 grainers it is quite pleasant to shoot. With 270s and up you need to hold on. grin

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

See if you can find a pic of Win458's 9.3 on a Win action.

It's pretty sweet for a tote-able thumper.
