I have to take down a few pecan trees, about 30 years old. The trunks are 10-15" diameter.

I don't use a smoker. But I have seen wood for smoking for sale on craigslist, etc.

Is there any value to the trunks of these trees for smoking wood, and if so, how should I handle it? Put it in the bar for a year and then cut and split it in quarters or so?

its like any other hardwood. age and split it and sell it for maybe a bit more than the average cord price. you might try finding a bbq joint in your area and see if they want it.

I would age it, split it, and run ads on craigslist or anywhere else I could advertise for free. Sell it for a bit less than going rate and I'm guessing you'll sell out.

Pecan seems to take a long time to dry. It's quicker of course, if you split it, but it tends to be hygroscopic, and if not used, or kept well covered, it gets 'wet' again.

It ought to be good for smoking. Pecan pellets are one of my favorites in my Traeger smoker.

I would think you should have a good market for pecan. It is similar to hickory, but milder with a touch of sweet.

No local mills to turn them into lumber? Pallet mills? Flooring mill?

Running the tops through a chipper will yield a ton of smoker chips... but they need to be cut before they leaf out, of course.

I love smoking pecan wood... just have a minor problem with the zig-zag papers. :-)

The best turkey i ever smoked was with Pecan wood in the big green egg.

Why dry the wood if you are going to soak the chips before putting them in the smoker?
