Check out the cartridge belt on the Savage owner. Must have 2 boxes of ammo strapped on. I have a pic of my Granddad in northern Minnesota looking similar.

Great old photo. I'm sure that their conversation would not be all that alien to our modern ear. They probably complained about that outgoing damn liberal progressive Roosevelt, work, and the weather. I'm sure they had good times too like the one captured in the picture. That ammo belt is impressive!

That is one monster buck. I wonder if they planted food plots with the latest mix of protein growth. Also, those jackets were surely sprayed down for scent control and also had the latest form of camo. I wonder if those rounds on the high speed belt had the proper form of bonded bullets.

Or none of that is true and they just went hunting.

That's how my family, when there was one, ALWAYS carried ammunition. I still have most of those leather belts worn by my father, brother, an several uncles. I still carry a full box in a Lawrence leather pouch.

As for carrying a ton of ammo via belts and such, I guess those guys did it because they could. Guys I've seen with full ammo belts always reminded me of illiterate Mexican banditos. As for me, a magazine-full in the gun and a couple spares in my pocket always sufficed. I guess if I were headed 100 miles into virgin wilderness I would take a few more with me in case a survival situation were forced upon me. Probably be better off renting a sat phone that would weigh less and take up less space in my kit than a couple boxes of survival ammo.

Looks like the guy on the left is also packing an ax. The guy in the middle looks like he's freezing his giblets off while the guy on the right looks very comfortable. Makes you wonder if it was the fourth member of the party who brought the camera?

I have my Dad's Hunter cartridge belt that carried ammo for his 99 T and EG in 250-3000.



I prefer carrying ammo in a Hunter cartridge box and/or synthetic folder.

I like the leather box. I don't think I've ever owned that much ammo for one cartridge, at one time, till I got into Savages. Except maybe military 06 ammo for the Garand, always had a can or two of it around. Now I've got multiple stacks of ammo for all of the Savage cartridges, never know when they'll quit making it, Joe.

Ya really need to start making your own, Joe! I can't imagine being at the mercy of the ammo companies.

Getting back to the pics- I get the vibe that it's a '95 in the hands of the guy on the left.

I actually blew the picture up and played with the contrast to look at it. Based on the straight lines of the forearm, I'm pretty sure it's an 1899.

So what gun is Frozen Guy packing? Is that a tube sticking out of the forearm?

I think it's another 1899.

I guess the third guy killed his deer with his bare hands. I see no gun with him.

I tried working with the pic as well. With the tube I figured Frozen Guy is packing a Winny.

The ammo belt with two boxes of cartridges went along with the hunting knife with a 12" blade back in the day. I have my grandfather's stag handled Kabar purchased sometime in the early 1920's, it looks as good as it did when he bought it. The sheath on the other hand long ago fell apart. not made nearly as well as the knife. Grandpa's other knife a jigged horn handled Remington UMC two bladed muskrat while in nice condition for a knife that is 80 + years old certainly shows that is was used much more than the Kabar.

Aha.. I think you're right. I was taking the tube for the forearm. I can see the loading gate on the side as well.

I think Comfortable Guy on the right used his prototype 99R to club his deer to death and then for the photo either hid the rifle behind the stump because the R was still a trade secret or because he was just sick and tired of hearing all of the heavy gun jokes, or something like that...
