To some people hunting is climbing a tree and sitting in a stand, to others it's climbing a mountain.
If you're sitting in a stand and shooting from a rest, packability and off hand balance really are of no concern and just about any configuration of a handgun will do.
If you're putting lots of a miles on your boots and may have to make a quick shot in heavy cover, other factors come into play.

Sorry for the thread hijacking, but I sometimes feel that various members sling commentary out there without explaining what it is they are basing their opinions on. Again, my apologies. Max - I bought it because that's the gun I wanted to buy. My Glock 20 carries plenty of firepower to at least turn a charging bear, even kill the bear. To keep the record clean however, I have done neither, but that doesn't stop me from having my Glock 20 strapped on when I Deer or Elk hunt. On several occasions instead of my Glock I strapped on my S&W 500. It wasn't much of a problem although it is considerably heavier than my Glock. John - No, I haven't been to Alaska for ANY reason. I haven't hand gun hunted outside of the lower 48 states. I didn't handgun hunt before I moved to the People's Republik of Illinois where you can't hunt game with a centerfire rifle. I came from Texas where you can hunt deer with just about anything for several months. Illinois "seasons" vary from a week to 3 days. I wanted to handgun hunt because it gave me another Illinois season to hunt.

S&W's marketing has done a good job of convincing folks they need a friggin' crew-served X-frame to kill deer when a .41Mag, .44Mag or .45Colt that weighs half as much and carries comfortably will do accomplish the same thing. Foot pounds and feet per second sell guns and that is the only reason why the X-frames are more popular than the .480.
And I believe JWP said "practical" reason. Important distinction.

Shorter chambered cylinder...more accurately the 45 Colt chambering. Yeah, but why is the cylinder chambered in .454 a drawback. Fits in the same place. My .454 SBH shoots .45 Colts with unbelievable accuracy. Just not sure why you're making the distinction. It's not and I didn't mean to imply that, but I think we're talking about different things. I'm just stating my preference, but comparing the two chamberings in the Bisley I agree with you, there is no downside, it makes no difference what brass you use, and one can load it hotter if one so desires...that's a win/win.

The 480 with 400 grain bullets @ 1200fps hits harder than a 460 S&W's 300 gr bullet @ 1700fps. How would one make that judgement? Have you been shot with both?

Don't recall what year it was ~2004, but I'd sent some of my 460 gr wfn's to a guy that was attending the Linebaugh seminar. He was launching them at a sedate 1100 fps. Bullet on left pentrated 38" of newsprint, bullet in right ~12" of newsprint and 2+" of bone.

If you want a 45 bisley I'd look for one of the dual cylinder 45 acp 45 colts. It'll push 330's 1300 fps from the colt cylinder, thats all I ever want out of a 45 caliber. If you want more, the 480 will push 400's 1200 fps which IMHO is the way to go vs the added velocity of the 454. this

Just went to the Simply Rugged website and looked in their Gear To Go section and they had a Sourdough for it so that takes care of a holster. Now reloading stuff and I am good to go
