Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? I'm looking at a nice old Winchester 1895 in this chambering.

Shrap will be along shortly!! smile

I noticed last evening that Collectors Firearms in Houston has a real nice flat side in 40-72. It has a healthy price tag. But nice flat sides tend to do that! It's on their website. Good luck!!!

Not alot of info on this chambering. I would have bought a scabbard worn 1895 chambered in 30-03 but someone beat me to it. My only concerns with the early 30-03 and 30-06 1895's are the barrel steel and head space issues.

You can read the thread on Shrapnels .40-72 here: http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/9398215/1

I also have the recent article by Mike Venturino on the .40 cal 1895s I can send you if you PM me your email address.

If I recall correctly, there's an article on the .40-72 in Ken Waters' "Pet Loads" from an old article in either "Rifle" or "Handloader" magazine. I'll see if I can find it.

It's in an article in "Pet Loads" called "Loading the Old Ones." Not much detail, since the article covers a whole bunch of older ctgs. but a couple of loads he tested are there. If you'll PM me your email, I could email them to you.

Thanks Mike for the info. Unfortunately I didn't end up with that rifle, so it's looking like I won't be loading 40-72 for awhile if ever.
