I just bought a Model 70 featherweight made in 1958. Caliber is 30-06. It came with a Pachmayr recoil pad that looks to be from that era. The length of pull including the recoil pad is 13 1/2 inches give or take an eighth.
1. Were the featherweight models offered with a recoil pad?
2. If so, was the Pachmayr recoil pad the correct one?
The reason I ask is that if the rifle is correct with the pad, then I am going to look for another stock to use. I do not think it is but I want to make sure. If it is not correct, then I am going to have a new pad installed. The recoil pad that is on the rifle now is every bit as hard as the stock.

The only fwt that came with a recoil pad from the factory was the 264 win. The 243, 270, 358, 308 and 30-06 originally came with an aluminum butt plate and then later (1959) came with plastic/composite butt plates. It was common for guys to install recoil pads on the heavier kickers to soften up recoil. Yours is probably one of those.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

That caliber did not come with a pad.
Is the 13 1/2" LOP with a pad good for you?
If so have a good smith install a new 'Winchester' aftermarket solid recoil pad.
If not shop for another stock.

After having and using the Galazan (repro pad) and red pachmayr decelerator, I'd opt for the latter. They soak up the recoil better and look just as good. A reproduction Winchester recoil pad is not going to increase the value of an already diminished value rifle... Hint..  . As per always, when it comes to Winchesters, don't listen to Savage...

My first choice for a replacement is a Pachmayr followed by a Limbsaver.

boliep, congratulations on your new rifle. I bought one similar last year. Struggled a bit with rings and mounts, went outside my Leupold comfort zone on glass. Hand buffed the stock out multiple times while my brain figured it all out. In the end, it came out great. You'll never be sorry you went this way.

The repro solid red Winchester pads do not do a very good job of recoil reduction, the Decelerator pad is a much better choice. I have some of each and prefer the Decelerator by far.

I have seen only one fwt. aside the 264 win mag fwt, that came from Winchester with a vent pad. A oldtimer in Tallahassee FL ordered the gun, a .308 from Winchester thru a Hardware store in Tallahassee, he is long gone now and I have often wondered where the gun ended up, the old gent was a procurement ,pulpwood buyer for St Joe Paper, he also had a Model 100 in .243. I wish I had bought that gun! very best WinPoor
