I'm looking at a #1 in 22-250. It's a red pad varmint edition according to the seller. Comes with rings and a 3-9 scope. Wood looks nice. How do I assess value on this rifle? When I go to GB they are all over the place. Seller is asking $850 obo

That's a good buy if it's in good shape and has life left in the barrel.

When I go to GB they are all over the place. Seller is asking $850 obo I have a black pad No.1V in 6mm Remington. Plainish wood. Paid $850 for it (with a beater Nikon 5.5x16) several years back. Personally, I'm not that into 22/250s, and if I had to pick a No.1 again, I wouldn't opt for a Varmint. Love the cartridge I have, and it's certainly accurate, but rather unpleasant to carry anywhere. It doesn't get used nearly as often as I thought it would. Currently sans scope, collecting dust. I own one (1978 edition). It's a fair shooter (around moa), but I feel it should do slightly better given it's heft and barrel. Considering some forearm bedding and a Kepplinger trigger for mine.
Do let us know how shoots if you pick it up.

Are the extended rings standard on the Varmint models? Mine has that also. Gives one a bit more leeway in getting the scope "just right".... Kaiser Norton

I think the 1V is the best of the Ruger #1s, at least for the purpose for which I used mine. I like the sturdier, non-elevated, scope mounts/bases. I agree that they are not ideal for carrying; but, for sitting at a prairie dog town, the 1V in 22-250 was perfect. It is the rifle I regret selling the most. In answer to the OP, I would say grab it.

My 1V in .22-250(the one in my avatar) is from 1977, and was a bit fussy about accuracy. It would sometimes put three in one hole, then toss the next one an inch away. I finally fire lapped it, and that seemed to really do the trick with it.

A couple of people have suggested over the years that the Swift is usually more accurate than the .22-250. I've only worked with the latter, so I can't verify it. Ruger appears to have recently made a run of #1V in the Swift, which are now out on the market. Pity they have plain wood and 1 in 14 twist.
~25 years ago I saw a #1 Swift in a gun shop in San Angelo, Tx. The wood was absolutely jaw dropping, full figure in the butt and even some figure in the forend. I looked at that rifle several times but never had the scratch to buy it. I finally walked in one day with the money to buy it and of course it was gone. I'd love to see that rifle turn up for sale some day, but if it shot half as good as it looked, it is probably someone's treasured heirloom.

Cabela's in Thornton, CO has 3 Ruger #1V 220 swifts for sale. I didn't notice any amazing wood on them, but if someone is looking...that's where I'd start.
