What is the best hunting rifle?

I do know that at present I am at least one rifle away from being satisfied.

That is a good question. When my daughter was 9 years old I started her with a 375 H&H but as she got older we progressed to a M107. So I think the M107 is the best.

Not as fancy as your PSL-54C, but it gets the job done.

I've probably killed more things with my .177 Crossman 760 pumpmaster I bought in 1976 than you've killed with you're PSL-54C.

But I've had 40 years to do it...

The PSL is not a sniper rifle. It is classified as a designated marksmans rifle. It was designed as longer range group support when the 7.62x39 runs range, the PSL can be used to hold enemy troops down while the other team members maneuver.

The above rifle is Yugoslavian and an 8mm Mauser. Similar but not a PSL. The PSL is literally an AK47 beefed up and lengthened to fire the 7.62x54r. The accuracy is similar too.

There is no universal 'best'. Use whatever you like and can shoot well that can do the job at the ranges you are willing to shoot.

Half the fun for me is trying out new rifles - not because the previous ones were not up to snuff but because I can.

This year my new Savage .243 will probably go antelope hunting. It is "perfect" because it is unblooded in my hands and is awesome accurate. But I consider the .243 less than ideal for elk and will be taking something else for that.

The problem with the Romanian Sniper rifle is though nothing gets away once a fella is on it, is that it takes sometimes years to get onto anything. Mostly because Sniper rifles have to track so slowly for fear of return fire.

That was a good and relevant question, and so far all we hear is crickets and deafening silence.

Not to worry, though, he's prolly off huntin'...for some kind of an answer to your question.

Or...maybe he just got tired of trolling and left.

People blow thousands of dollars every year jumping from rifle to rifle, and cartridge to cartridge, trying to find it.

Most of the moves are horizontal, the newest addition showing no vast improvement over what they got rid of.

Very true Bob, I am guilty of buying a bunch of rifles with one not really being any better than the next one but for the last several years I have stuck with the same .300 Win cartridge, it just makes My loading bench much more simple and uncluttered.....It has been great fun...........Hb

I'm with you, you need at least 12 rifles to cover the full spectrum of game, hunting in brush, hunting in open fields, hunting in humid areas and so on. LOL

The best hunting rifle is probably the one you sold a couple years back.
You know the one, most likely a .270 or .30-06 that killed everything you pointed it at. It shot cor-lokts inside of an inch and your first handloads quite a bit better.

Then you realized you needed something bigger/faster, or more snipery.

Then I sold it. Oops, I mean you sold it.

Browning BAR self-loading rifle. It is available in variety of calibers including powerful ones like 9,3x62 and .338WinMag suitable large game hunting. For me ideal caliber would be .358 Winchester though that one was probably never available.

Followed closely by the 99F in .358. Savages two best for long and short work.

You don't want that English clunker. The only good thing about them was higher capacity magazine which is considered unsporting for game hunting. Here is nice rifle if you don't mind iron sight only setup. If chambered for 8x57JS (NOT 8x57J) you're good to go.

Even before I clicked on it I knew from the title of the thread I should have never opened it. Like a moth to a flame I guess. Next time OP try, "what is your favorite hunting rifle?".

You don't want that English clunker. The only good thing about them was higher capacity magazine which is considered unsporting for game hunting. Here is nice rifle if you don't mind iron sight only setup. If chambered for 8x57JS (NOT 8x57J) you're good to go.

Good gun for American farmer.....

Was gonna say some kind of 98 in .30/06, but yours is close enough. M70 right behind, in any standard chambering.

Getting back to the original question>>>> Gun for American land barron.....

Checkered metal butt would be preferable to leather covered pad, but for one of about 500 as they say "beggars can't be choosers".
