I just got this rifle in on a trade. It's a Kar 98, Erfurt 1915 with new welded on bolt handle, low scope safety, one piece Leupold base with Leupold medium matte rings, jewelled bolt and follower. It's chambered in .257 Roberts and the 22" barrel is stamped "Mesick's Gunshop" which I can only assume is who did the work way back when. I ordered a Bold trigger that I got installed and set to what feels like a crisp 3#. I don;t have a scale so all I can compare it to is my commercial mauser in 30-06 with the same Bold trigger that is set to 3.5#. It has a streamlined Schnabel stock. Pretty cool little lightweight gun and should be perfect for carrying through the woods here in central NC for whitetail. Overall length is 43". It does also have one of those hinged aluminum floorplates with the pronghorn engraving which I'm not real crazy about, but it helps save a few oz so I can live with it. I may look at getting some Tally lightweights to help safve a couple more oz over the spring/summer.

I got to shoot it yesterday, albeit only 50 yards, but I did get it sighted in to minute of deer. I loved the lack of recoil on this little rifle. I'm taking it with me this afternoon to see if I can grab some meat for the freezer. I just thought I would share a couple pics that I had of it and see if any one could give me any information about the "Mesick's Gunshop". A google search turned up nothing. There is just something about an old Mauser action turned into a nice sporter

No comments on the wall color or decorations...it was a compromise so I could turn the extra bedroom into my hunting/reloading room.

That is one fine rifle. One most folks would be proud to own and hand down.

Very nice set-up. Classic action, classic caliber, good combination. Pretty nice wood to boot. I cant see putting Talley LW's on a classic like that, but Im funny like that.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I traded a Tikka T3 SS for it. I already have another stainless/synthetic rifle that I can use for bad weather so the Tikka had to go. SS/Syn rifles have no character to them. I don't see this one going anywhere...it's a keeper for sure.

My hunt yesterday was uneventful. I had a small cowhorn come in just before dark that I let walk. The weather today is nasty so I'll have to wait until next week to try and take something with the new rifle.

Does anyone know anything about the Mesick's Gunshop? I figured it must have been a shop that closed down many years ago.

Don't know anything about Mesick's Gunshop, but if you get tired of the rifle, PM me. I will take it off your hands. Love the Bob, especially on a Mauser action! Great find and enjoy! It is a great caliber.

Kudos on the snag.. That is one VERY fine rifle, in a great caliber. Mauser's do have character...

Very nice. And the .257 Roberts is a great choice - may favorite rifle is my Ruger .257 Roberts.

Bumping this back up. I've considered selling or trading this rifle for a production short action in 260, 6.5 CM, 7-08 or 308. I honestly don't know what it would be worth but I know I'm willing to give it away. Ive worked up a load with 100 TTSXs that will go under 0.7" so I know it's a shooter. The only thing I have done since my original post is swap scopes and have a recoil pad fitted.

Anyone have a guess at value, other than whatever one is willing to pay?

What is the LOP with the recoil pad fitted?

What does the recoil pad look like?

It's a Pachmayer white line, LOP is 13 1/2". Pad is all black.

My guess for value would be between $500-700 depending upon whether the right person saw it and if you include glass.

It's a beautiful rifle. Production rifles can be had anytime this is a S lassos example of post-war workmanship that is not in common but becoming less common.
