Check the pics on this thread from the main forum.
Unfortunate circumstance to go along with them.

Alamosa,

Does your dog sniff out antler or does he just go along for the ride?

I sometimes pick sheds up when I see them...but have never gotten into it. I know they can be worth ~$8 a pound, but just can't get into looking for them.

Like mentioned above, there are people that get SERIOUS about it. That's just fine with me as they spend less time in the woods during actual hunting season. There's been several places where I found an obvious wintering area straight up full of sheds, but I leave them lay, unless it is a big moose or matched elk shed or something. People say I am nuts to do it, but if I didn't shoot it, I don't want it...

I thought all of our deer had dropped, but we had a good 3 x 3 mulie pass through our yard about 2 days ago.

Doing a spring bear outing in a couple weeks so I should be in some good elk country for that.

She has a tremendous ability to locate antlers but she is a spoiled little diva and only brings one when it is her idea to do so.
It is so frustrating because if I send her for one I get nothing but then she will occasionally surprise me with one.

We got her when the old girl on the right, Heidi, reached a ripe old age and got close to the end. RIP.

I could tell Heidi to find an antler and she would begin a systematic search until she came up with something.

As long as they go to them, you're doing pretty good!

We raised a few litters of high dollar Labs. A young man bought 3 pups to train for shed hunting, he said a good shed dog can bring 3K or better. I thought wow, I just use them for a few birds and Ducks.

I really enjoy shed hunting. Used to find a bunch every spring, up until WY implemented a shed antler season for the western side of the state. Which they did for good reason as the winter range where all the big mule deer bucks from the high country winter at was an absolute zoo with people watching those big 200 inch deer until they shed, then they would run out and pick the antler up right after it hit the ground. Caused the deer a lot of undue stress in the winter. But there are a few people who cheat and go out before the season opens. It's created a situation where law abiding folks don't find much, and the guys who go in early have an all out bonanza of antler picking with no competition.
