I've been trying to find an extended hammer spur for this rifle without any luck. Uncle Mike's, Williams etc just won't fit it. The hammer is so narrow and sharp it's hard to control it with gloves on. Is it possible to replace the hammer with a newer one that I can get an extension for? Thanks in advance!

You could replace the hammer with a new style hammer. Some over at Marlinowners have done this. Gunpartscorp.com would have them.

Shim with duct tape?

I've the same problem with my '57 RC. I plan on TIG welding a little extension I'll make onto the hammer. The only ways I could seen to add an extension was welding or drilling a hole through and bolting something on. A bolt on will end up ulgly, heavier, and less secure than a welded piece.

If you check Midway's website, Uncle Mikes and others sell two versions of the hammer spur, for earlier guns, and later guns. If you know the year your rifle was made, you should be able to find a spur that fits.

You have to read the descriptions carefully, but they are available. I found one for my 1960 Marlin and it fit up with no heartaches or headaches.

They made one for the earlier 336 & 39. It was made by Williams...you were supposed to drill a shallow hole or punch mark for the set screw. Here is a pic of one. It fits on my mid 50's 336.

Nice! I know it's an old post but I'm a newby. I had a 336A that I think was a "Wildcat"..30/'30 with a 24" barrel. Was made in 1948 or so. Narrow hammer and not drilled and tapped. I was almost 17 when I took it to a gunsmith and had it drilled and tapped against his advice. In the years before the scope I never missed. This was in the 80s and I had a Bushnell 3-9x40 and Just enough room to cock the hammer with the side of my thumb and had to get used to the pinch upon decocking. That rifle got stolen by a somebeach. I was in my mid 20s when I found another 336A with the 24" barrel. It was also made in the 40s and not drilled and tapped. That one will remain scope free but it's nice to see that vintage hammer extension.
