Not fussing about anyone making money.

But now there is an ad covering the left side of the page. Covering the topic buttons, forum list etc and there's no way to minimize or get around the ad.

What's the trick here?

Install AdBlock or uBlock in your browser.

I hear that constantly.

I don't mind the ads. Learn from them and occasionally they even work on me.

But this ad covers a good piece of the page. It isn't contained in a distinct spot. It doesn't pop up, run and then let you move on. It sits there covering the upper left 1/6 of the page. How is that even remotely functional?
