All things being equal (as much as they can be) what is a more desirable gun, a 99EG or 99F chambered for 300 Savage?

The 99F is a fine gun to handle, carry and shoot. That would be my choice. The EG is a beautiful rifle and plentiful.

The EG has the schnable forearm, which is a Savage classic, but the vast majority are not factory d&t.

The 1950's 99F is factory d&t, and lighter and shorter barrel.

Don't know if there is a more desirable solution for a hunting rifle. Collector wise, the 99F probably barely gets the nod because there's less premils in 300 than 99EG's in 300.

There are 2 models with the F designation. The 99 F takedown (which has 1899 stamped on it) stands alone. There is several barrel types offered with different thicknesses and front sights. The modern F has a pistol grip and light barrel. It might be more rare than the eg....but it seems there are more safe queen eg s out 2 be had.

I prefer the F for hunting, although the EG is more classic looking, in my eyes. Deer aren't going to notice the difference, though. grin

The EG, unless it’s a Tuesday or a Thursday afternoon and then it’s the F. In all seriousness, it’s just a matter of taste. If anyone thinks that an EG is too much to carry, then consider the battalions of hunters who carried pre-64 Winchester 70s into the field. The barrels on those things are truck axels - not that I'm complaining - it’s just a comparison.

If both factory drilled and tapped, I would go with the EG. If the EG isn't, then I would go with the F. Actually, I would get a post war R over an F. The Fs are too light for me.

One shouldn't have to make such difficult choices...get both! If you're spending the day walking in close woods, take the F. If you're on open ground, considering longer shots, take the EG..., have both in the truck.

Well looky here, always one in the crowd brings up the gawd awful r. The OP was a question on either an EG or F model. Two models, an EG or F. Gees!

Is this question desirable for collection or hunting? Or gardening or boating? They all have different answers.

All things being equal what is more desirable, a gorgeous blonde or a smoking hot brunette?

No right or wrong answer, just different opinions....

I guess there's no complaints about the state of the economy with advice on getting both. And yes, I too want photos of the gorgeous blonde and smoking hot brunette, and maybe a stunning redhead too! Woops, I just added a third model into the mix. My bad!

Get the EG. Bob the barrel to minimum legal length, cut the stock off leaving just the pistol grip, remove the fore arm, and rig a big old holster like the one McQueen wore on that old Western. Voilà- the handiest rig for the deer woods ever invented, and one that will guarantee your solitude if the woods get crowded. No need to thank me.

Nickel plated, with a dangling leather thong.

I volunteer to give her a camo body paint-job. And I'll let her keep the rifle.

Has the model been drilled and tapped? Factory or bubba?

I'd say probe it first, then apply the two part hardener.

I wonder what load she's using. I wonder what distance she's sighted in at. I wonder if she's a screamer.

Note to self: get posters made, and find out who she is and get her there to autograph them. Perhaps she will divulge where she likes to hunt.

What am I saying?? Who cares whether she hunts or not? laugh
